Who doesn't know this? The curtains need to be washed once again. So you set about laboriously taking the window coverings off the curtain rods and putting them into the washing machine. After the wash cycle, you are full of anticipation, because nothing is nicer than white and sweet-smelling curtains. However, the disillusionment follows when decorative scarves, Roman blinds, or bistro curtains adorn the windows again: the curtains haven't turned out completely white, but rather dark white, almost champagne-colored with a tendency to yellow. But nobody wants that in their rooms, unless they deliberately chose curtains that weren't white, but clearly window sets in beige or yellow. But what can you do about it? Here we have the best tips:
Tips and tricks for snow-white curtains
Of course, there are numerous products available in drugstores that promise to restore the whiteness of our curtains. These products look great and the advertising makes some of us hope to regain the former whiteness of the curtains. But beware: these chemical clubs are often aggressive and can often cause more damage to the curtains than one would suspect. Furthermore, you are certainly not doing the beloved environment any favors with the chemicals – so there must be another way. After all, our grandparents had their tips and tricks in the old days too.
Exactly: in the past, grandmothers knew how to use many a trick to help good curtains, as well as clothing and linen tablecloths, return to a radiant white. These methods are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective. Those are truly reasons that make the housewife or househusband prick up their ears. Let's take a closer look at the tricks:
Trick 1: Baking powder or baking soda
Baking powder can simply be added to the laundry with the detergent. For this, simply pour two bags of baking powder into the washing drum and wash the curtains as normal. For deep-seated dirt, you should repeat this procedure. Instead of baking powder, you can of course also use baking soda.
Trick 2: Cola
Cola doesn't just taste delicious, it can also brighten laundry. Simply add a glass of cola to the wash. The phosphoric acids contained in the cola penetrate deep into the textiles and get rid of the dirt.
Trick 3: Denture cleaner
These tabs are not only excellent for cleaning dentures, but also fight any gray haze in curtains & Co. For this cleaning method, simply add two to three tabs to the wash and let the wash program run as usual.
Trick 4: Vinegar and lemon
Vinegar and lemons are usually always in the household. To make the window curtains shine white again, you can simply add a dash of vinegar or the juice of a lemon to the fabric softener.
Trick 5: Soda
To get curtains nice and clean again, soak them in a mixture of 10 L of water and 500 g of soda and then rinse with clear water.
Trick 6: Salt
Wash some salt with the curtains to make them white again. This will also keep them clean for longer.
Washing curtains
Curtains is best done never hotter than 30 degrees, they should not be spun and should be hung up while still wet. This way they won't wrinkle and the fine fabric stays nice. It is favorable to put the curtains in a laundry bag or a pillowcase, then the fine fabric won't tear.
Starching curtains naturally
If you don't want to buy a special agent to starch your curtains, you can try this alternative: Mix 1 tsp of potato starch in 1 L of water and pour this mix into the washing machine for the last rinse cycle.
How do gray veils form?
The so-called gray veil that surrounds our curtains can hardly be avoided. It creeps into all rooms and settles on the curtains in dark tones like a breath. However, this is quite normal, because where we humans live, we also produce all kinds of odors. Dust, cigarette smoke, environmental influences, and much more contribute to the fact that the window decoration must sooner or later give up its radiant white.
