Do you know this feeling? When suddenly nothing tastes good anymore, you haven't felt a proper appetite for days, and somehow everything tastes the same? Even your favorite dish can't stimulate your hunger, and that delicious cake is politely declined. Loss of appetite can be quite normal – especially in advanced age, the senses of taste decline, but other causes such as pain, medication, stress, or everyday worries can also block your appetite.
Can stress really kill your appetite?
You bet! Whether it's money worries or heartbreak – when even grief affects your desire to eat, it's serious. On the other hand, there are of course people who feel an even greater appetite for these very reasons. Time pressure, illness, pain, or various problems are usually the main causes when appetite disappears. However, you can lure your hunger back with a few tricks.
How can you optimally stimulate your appetite?
If hunger fails to appear, you can try eating one or two Radishes half an hour before the planned meal. Hunger should then set in in time.
If, despite all efforts, your appetite still doesn't really return, certain spices can provide a boost. The scent and taste in spices are determined by essential oils, which can promote appetite and also make dishes more aromatic. Particularly helpful are:
- Chili
- Curry
- Peppers
- Allspice
- Ginger
- Pepper
At some point, you should just let everyday life be everyday life and reflect on the pleasurable benefits of life again. Make the meal what it was many centuries ago: an event! Enjoy the scents while cooking, delight in the colors of the ingredients, and celebrate the act of eating. A beautifully set table, a few atmospheric candles, some music, and of course the right company can naturally enhance the meal. Enjoy the food with all your senses and renounce gloomy thoughts.
How can I curb my appetite?
The stark opposite is ravenous hunger. Some people can eat whatever they want and never feel full. Here, too, stress, grief, and worries can be to blame for the misery. Whether out of boredom or due to problems – to curb your appetite, you should not resort to medication (so-called appetite suppressants). You should get your hunger under control with healthier methods. Eating half portions, small healthy snacks, focusing on the food, etc., are good options. It also helps to exercise; this keeps you busy and makes you reach less for unhealthy fattening foods.
How do I change my eating habits?
To put your appetite to flight, it makes sense to restructure your eating habits. Do not eat too hectically, because this leads to consuming too much food, a feeling of fullness arises, and nausea is inevitable. It is better to eat more slowly, with all your senses, and concentrate on the food. Also, eat foods more often that actively fill the stomach. A soup or a green salad can perform this function excellently. Reach more often for
fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products – these fiber-rich foods are not only good for your health but also provide optimal satiety.Plenty of sleep calms the organism. The
leptin level in the body is increased by sleep, and you have less hunger. If the ravenous hunger is too great, chewing gum and snacking on gummy bears can be a good solution. Or brush your teeth right after dinner in the evening; this makes you less likely to reach for chips and the like.Despite all the good suggestions, you should never forget, despite loss of appetite or ravenous hunger attacks, that eating should be a healthy act. Three healthy main meals daily as well as two small snacks per day ensure that our body receives the minerals and vitamins it needs.
