The scent and beautiful color of lilacs always lift the spirits. It is wonderful to see the first lilac buds after a long winter. So it is not surprising that many people want to bring a few lilac blossoms into their home. But how do you keep lilacs in a vase for a long time?
Lilacs last longer in a vase
To cut the lilac stems, you need sharp, pointed scissors as well as a sharp knife. Always cut the flowering shoot directly at the base and choose branches with buds that have not yet fully opened. If flower shoots have already wilted, you do not need to cut them; they will not perk up in the vase.
The time of day is also crucial when cutting, as not every time of day is suitable. It is best to cut branches early in the morning or in the evening. Lilac stems cut at noon wilt much faster. Unless you want to dry lilac blossoms, then pick them at noon. If the branches need to be transported for a while, put a bucket of water in the car immediately so that the blossoms stay fresh longer.
Lilacs last longer in a vase if you peel off the bark for a few centimeters, remove the foliage, and place the stems in warm water for a few minutes first. Only then place them in the vase.
Change the vase water completely every day, do not just top it up. The vase should also always be rinsed well. The stems should be re-cut every 2 days. The best place for a bouquet of lilacs is away from sun and drafts. Also, do not place the bouquet next to a bowl of fruit. For long durability, it also helps if you place the lilacs in a cool room or cellar overnight.
Extra tip:By the way, lilac buds unfortunately do not open in a vase.
Flower tip:A lilac bouquet is usually beautiful enough on its own, but if you still want to arrange other flowers with it, you should choose tulips, roses, or wallflowers.
