There are many shapes and areas of application for brushes and combs. Standing in front of the shelf with brushes in a drugstore, one is overwhelmed by the selection. But which brush is right for my hair? Which brush can I use to blow-dry hair straight? Which one is good for styling? We have gathered a lot of information about brushes here to make choosing the right one easier:
Which brushes are there?
First of all, brushes consist of the brush body (handle and brush head) and the bristles. The brush body can be made of various types of wood (birch, beech, mahogany, teak, etc.), hard rubber, plastics, or, in the case of luxury brushes, tortoiseshell, precious metals, or ivory.
In the luxury version, the bristles are drawn into the brush body with a stainless wire – usually by hand, which is why they are so expensive – or they are punched in. Plastic brushes can be molded in one piece (i.e., brush body and bristles from a single cast). Furthermore, there are brushes with bristles made of animal materials such as horsehair or boar bristles; in wire brushes, the bristles consist of thin wire pins. Regardless of what you choose, it is important that the bristles are elastic and strong and do not bend after the first use. Especially if you want to use the brush for blow-drying, the bristles must be heat-resistant and must not deform due to the heat.
Different types of brushes for beautiful hair
There are many different types of brushes that can be used for different hairstyles and hair types. We have listed a few here:
- With the Round hairbrush you can basically do nothing wrong. It is suitable for almost every hair type: whether short hairstyles or people with fine or layered hair. You can conjure up more volume with a round brush. For this, each strand is worked on individually with the brush. Tip: do not set the hair dryer too hot, as this damages the hair and dries out the scalp. Leave the brush in the strand for a little while after blow-drying – this helps the shape last longer.
- With the Flat brush – Skeleton brush (or vent brush) you can tame unruly hair well. The widely spaced bristles easily work through all hair sections – from root to tip. Tip: fine hair can be teased very well with a skeleton brush. Simply brush against the direction of growth and shape with your fingers.
- The Tail comb is excellent for applying hair styling products. Thanks to the fine teeth of the comb, mousse can be distributed better than with your hands, for example. With the handle, you can specifically separate different strands and work in tints, dyes, or hair rollers better.
- The Sectioning comb is a product for sensitive hair types. This comb is very suitable, especially after washing hair or for detangling wet hair. Therefore, it is also often recommended by hairdressers to customers after perms or headlines.
- The Paddle brush is a very wide brush that is very suitable for medium-length to long straight hair. With this brush, hair can be blow-dried beautifully straight and shiny.
- The Denman brush consists of a very stable plastic body, strong plastic bristles, and an inserted rubber layer. This brush is excellent for detangling wet and long hair and for blow-drying bob haircuts. is a narrow, slightly tapered brush with very soft plastic bristles.
- The Roger Para brush is often used in hair salons for brushing out set hairstyles. Especially with the very fine hair of older ladies, this brush allows for very good control over the hair. Very short hair can also be blow-dried perfectly with volume.
- The queen of brushes is the Mason Pearson brush. It consists of a plastic body with a pneumatic rubber cushion; the bristles are half soft, elastic plastic and half boar bristles. Dry hair can be perfectly freed from hairspray and lacquer. Set hair can be brushed through vigorously and brought into shape. Although the brush is very expensive, it lasts a lifetime – it is a must-have for professional hairdressers!
- The Tangle Teezer is a professional hairbrush for hair that tangles or mats quickly. With this brush, extremely matted areas can be detangled without pulling.
Important: you should comb your hair several times a day. This provides special care and reduces the occurrence of tangled hair areas. Additionally, the scalp is massaged.
Caring for brushes and combs
Combs and brushes should be cleaned once a month. For this, all hair must of course be removed from the brush. Subsequently, the brushes can soak in a shampoo bath for approx. 10 minutes. This removes care products and dandruff as best as possible. After the bath, let the brushes dry well. Be careful with brushes with wooden handles: these should not soak up too much water, as the material can swell and crack.Â
