Excuse me? Removing corns? Yes, this doesn't refer to the pretty eyes of chickens, but callus formations on the toes. In general, these are also referred to as crow's eyes, heloma, or clavus – but they all have one thing in common: they can be incredibly painful. Corns develop on or between the toes due to ill-fitting footwear, constant strain, and recurring pressure. The pain from the calluses is caused by the core, which is directed inward.

Why is a corn actually called a 'chicken eye' (HĂĽhnerauge) in German?

Quite obviously, the corn or 'crow's eye' got its name because it looks extremely similar to a bird's eye. The callus is round, with a depression visible in the middle, so that the 'eye' rests painfully on or between the toes.

How bad is the pain?

Corns can be very painful. Often a stabbing pressure develops, and usually walking becomes almost impossible. However, it's not just the pain that is annoying – anyone who likes to wear flip-flops or sandals in the summer will want to tackle the calloused skin. Because let's face it, corns are really not nice to look at.

What can I do about corns?

Evening foot bath

This method is probably very well known: take an evening foot bath so that the skin softens nicely, and then treat the areas of the corn with a pumice stone. Afterwards, apply cream and care for the skin.

Raisin

Myth or home remedy? Cut a Raisin in half, soak it in a water bath for a few hours, and fix the softened raisin with the cut side onto the corn – preferably overnight.

Lemon

Maybe a lemon helps? Simply place a slice of lemon on the corn overnight and secure it well. Then soak the foot in a water bath – the corn can now be easily removed.

Plasters or drops

Of course, there are also numerous plasters and drops in drugstores – for some they help better, for others less. If nothing else works, a podiatrist can help. However, if the corns are in a very bad position, they can even be surgically removed.
