Family outing to Familypark St. Margarethen

Amusement parks are a real treat for children and adults alike. For children, it’s exciting to do something new, especially with Mom and Dad. I had already heard so many good things about the fairy-tale park in Burgenland that we absolutely had to go and see it. So we took our first trip to the park by Lake Neusiedl with our 3-year-old twins. By now, an outing like this is a must at least once every year, because it’s not only our children who really like the park. Grandma and Grandpa, and of course we as parents, are also absolutely delighted by the beautiful and lovingly designed attractions in this family park. I also think the details are fantastic. Pay attention to the decorations and the garden design. Or visit the Family Park at Halloween. Simply brilliant decorations! Here I would like to share our experiences and tips with you:

Tips on what to bring for the amusement park

The right clothing for the Familypark

When visiting the amusement park, you should dress the children and yourself in comfortable clothing. When it comes to clothing, I always swear by the so-called onion look: wear several light layers that you can take off. Ideally, things that can get dirty or even wet. Since the park is quite large, you should make sure to wear well-fitting and comfortable shoes.

Very important: In my experience, children should not wear flip-flops or slippers, as there are many climbing stations and also carousels where shoes could get lost.

In summer, on hot days, swimming trunks and towels are recommended for the children, as there is a water park for swimming. There is also a sand playground, so it may be a good idea to have clothes or shoes ready to change into before getting back into the car.

With a buggy in the Familypark

We very often had our twin buggy with us, and it was no problem at all; the paths are all nice and wide and there are ramps everywhere. The buggies can be parked in front of the carousels, so we were often able to ride or climb as a foursome.

Lockers

Anyone who wants to can also store their belongings in lockers here. Since we had the buggy with us, it was easy, because we stored everything in the buggy.

Food and drink in the Familypark

There are restaurants everywhere where you can eat and drink. Here you are spoiled for choice when it comes to what you would like to eat. Most are self-service restaurants. Throughout the park you will also keep finding opportunities to sit down on benches and recharge.

There is also an ice cream parlor on Filippo’s Adventure Island, and Crazy Croco Crash is definitely worth a visit. The original Italian ice cream in the Roman Quarter is also very delicious.

At the Römer Taverne, we even received a Familypark glass with a menu. By now we have tried all the restaurants and have always been very satisfied.

Sanitary facilities in the Family Park

There is a very large selection of toilets throughout the park. Every toilet has a changing room and is very spacious, so in some cases you can even drive in with the buggy. With small children, this is really perfectly done. The service is also great if you run out of diapers or have forgotten some: simply buy a pack of diapers at the ticket office, so you don’t have to go straight home or go shopping.

Additional information

There are several coin machines in the park, most of which work with bank cards. Bicycles, skateboards, and scooters are not permitted in the park.

Since 2022: next to the Waldexpress you will find the “Sack & Pack” shop, where you can get great souvenirs of the Familypark, Pauli Biber, Minky, and Filippo.

Attractions in the Märchenpark

In Austria’s largest amusement park, with over 140,000 m², every child is guaranteed to find something to enjoy. There are so many different attractions, such as climbing options, rides, electronic theaters, fairy-tale displays, as well as a petting zoo and playgrounds. Here I would like to show you a few highlights of our wonderful day at the Familypark.

Drachenbahn

Right after the entrance, we first headed up high: the Drachenbahn. Here you ride in individual dragons along rails above the park. Two adults, or one adult and one child, can fit inside. At first I was a little surprised because you have to pedal yourself here, but then I thought it was great because it lets you control how fast you want to go.

From up here you have a lovely view and can already get a glimpse of some of the other carousels. The children really liked the ride, and we even rode it twice.

Turmgucker

The Turmgucker is another attraction for park visitors who are not afraid of heights and are strong. It can be found right after the entrance by the Drachenbahn. Using a rope, you can pull yourself up into the air and enjoy the view.

• Children over 125 cm may ride alone

Schupsi Land

Give something a shove without Mom or Dad scolding you right away? Then you absolutely have to march through Schubsi-Land.

Lots of sandbags hang here, and you can’t get through without pushing these sacks aside. Of course, you also have to be careful here, because someone else might want to push the sacks too.

Our children liked Schupsi-Land and kept running back and forth between the sacks.

Balloon carousel

On this carousel, you sit in large balloons and fly through the air. It spins quickly in a circle and also goes up high. The balloons fly at a slight angle and go up and down.

It looks really great when the balloons fly through the air like that. My husband and I tested this attraction right away and approved of it – but be careful when getting out, I did feel a bit dizzy.

Unfortunately, it was not yet for our children; they did not want to ride it yet.

Oldtimer Convoy

A lovely ride where children (and adults too) can sit in the cars and be driven around. Here there are four seats for children in each car: two downstairs in the truck with a door but without a belt, and two seats upstairs with a belt.

Our children were a little disappointed that they were not allowed to get in at the front by the door. Children under four have to sit in the seats upstairs, because belts are only available there. Unfortunately, there are no belts in the driver’s cabins. Adults can also ride in the upper seats, which is mandatory up to the age of 4.

Duck Parade

This carousel is in the water and, as the name suggests, ducks play a role.

You sit comfortably in large ducks and are driven around in a circle on a small pond. One adult and one child can ride here.

• Children over 120 cm may ride alone

New 2014: Adlerflug

The Adlerflug is located right at the entrance to the park. Here, 2 people can be pulled in the eagle gondola along a U-shaped track to a height of 7.5 m.

Kletterburg

In the middle of the park there is a climbing castle where children can slide and climb to their hearts’ content. It is beautifully situated in the shade of the fairy-tale forest and resembles a knight’s castle.

We even had to go there twice with our children because they really wanted to climb in the big castle.

Der Komet

Der Komet is a large swing that swings back and forth. You can build up quite a lot of momentum here.

Not interesting for our children yet; the children need to be a bit bigger. But my husband had a lot of fun with it. It’s fun when you can swing back and forth here again and again.

Turtle carousel

A sweet carousel for 3- to 6-year-old children is the turtle parade. Here, children can “fly” alone or in pairs around a mushroom with turtles. The carousel does not spin too fast and is ideal for small children.

Children can ride alone here, and parents can watch from the bench provided.

Suitable for:

• only for children between 90 cm and 125 cm tall

Fairy-tale forest

I still know this part of the Familypark from my childhood; back then it was “only” a fairy-tale forest where you could wander among the fairy tales. Now the fairy tales are closer together and you get from one fairy tale to the next very quickly. This part is a must-see; I think it is beautiful and lovingly designed.

Each fairy tale is recreated here with well-known scenes, and with many fairy tales there is also a button that tells the story.

Vogelhochzeit

Most people probably know this children’s song. In the Familypark there is a little house of its own where lots of birds are waiting to sing their little song. It is really great and designed with lots of attention to detail.

Our children especially liked this station because there were so many buttons to press. Benches are set up for the adults so they can rest a little in the meantime.

Sumpfburg

This is a really great and large climbing station. There are many bridges, towers, and grids to explore here. It’s fantastic how this climbing castle is built. It is really very large and winding.

Unfortunately, at first this station was not yet for our children; the children need to be a bit bigger here. Now, at age 5, we did our first course and it is really great. You can cross this Sumpfburg on various climbing paths. Many climbing options are offered here, and you also have to be a little careful, because you can get drenched with water here. Small cannons are set up at the sides where other children can shoot. Really very well done!

Neptune’s Water World

For children, playing in the water is a real treat. It is like a magnet for children. That is why Neptune’s Water World is of course just the right thing for children.

In summer, children can play in the water here to their hearts’ content; there are many ways to cool off here. So in summer, be sure to bring towels and swimming trunks!

Tempelrutsche

Sliding for a really long way—which child doesn’t want that? Here in the Familypark there are very long slides: the Tempelrutschen.

At the foot of the slides, you take a boat and go up the steps on the right. Then simply sit on the boat and race down the wave slide. Since water flows down here, you get sprayed a little. Here, one adult can slide down with one child.

Our children did not want to go down this slide at first. At age 5, however, they were already very enthusiastic.

Pirate Battle

The Pirate Battle is located below the Tempelrutschen. Here, 2 pirate ships can shoot at each other. The pirates have to take off their shoes here and quickly collect a few balls—WITHOUT getting shot. That is not so easy when the boats are already occupied. Once you have grabbed a few balls, quickly get onto the boat, which is divided into 2 levels. Cannons can be found here again and again, and they are loaded with the balls. And now all you have to do is aim at the “opponent.”

A funny idea, and our son especially liked it very much. He had to try out almost all the cannons, and on every deck.

Römerfallen

Right next to the Tempelrutsche there is a very large, great tree house. On many paths you can climb all the way up into a wonderful tree house. In the tree house, a pole takes you up another bit, and you have a really great view. A suspension bridge and narrow walkways are a must here and make the climbing fun perfect.

We climbed around with our children for a very long time and it was a lot of fun! From up here you can see all the way to Lake Neusiedl.

Dragon’s cave

Now it goes from the airy heights into the dark depths. At the very bottom in a cave there is a large dragon that you first have to wake up. Then it immediately chats away, tells stories, and of course moves. And a small surprise awaits the brave grown-up visitors :-).

Unfortunately, it was too dark for our children and they turned back right away.

The bear-y pirate band

Our children were captivated by this band. It is really sweetly done, how the bears dressed as pirates make music and chat. By pressing a button, they play their little song again and again and are happy that they play so well.

This band invites you to linger; there are a few benches for resting and it is nicely covered.

Remote-controlled boats

The remote-controlled boats also only work after inserting Family-Park coins. However, there is a machine here where you can exchange for the coins.

The boats can be maneuvered using a steering wheel and lever. Unfortunately, the railing is still a little too high for our children, but the children were able to watch from the small bridge.

Croco water ride

This water ride is surely a hit on hot days. Here you get into a large crocodile and ride up and down. Again and again there are water jets just waiting to spray you.

We only looked at this ride from the outside as well, because it was still too cool to get sprayed wet.

Extra tip: Be careful in windy weather: the wind can really blow the spray fountains around, so that sometimes you can no longer avoid the water at all!

Götterblitz

A really great family roller coaster. Pulled by a horse, the cars race up and down into the air and do lap after lap. You get nicely shaken around here.

My absolute highlight, as a roller coaster fan. The only disadvantage: the ride is far too short for my taste.

Of course, this ride was still absolutely nothing for 3-year-olds. But when they are bigger, I already know where we have to go!

Giant sand playground

Where there is water, there must also be sand. Children love playing in the sand, so a sand playground is a must. But this sand playground is not just a sandbox; it is a huge sand playground with lots of accessories.

Extra tip: take a few little shovels and buckets with you and the children will already be busy here; but there is also quite a bit of equipment for playing.

New 2012: Die Fliegenden Fische

This carousel was built brand new in 2012. You sit in large fish boats that you can steer up or down with a stick, and it also spins in a circle. In summer you have to pay special attention, because the fish mounted on the sides can spray water, so you have to skillfully change height so you don’t get wet.

The giant octopus is really funny, and I’m already curious how the spraying will be in summer.

Seedrache

The Seedrache swings you through the air and allows a wonderful—if short—view of Lake Neusiedl. It is a very large swing in the shape of a sea dragon, with room for lots of children and adults.

I tried the Seedrache and must admit that it takes some getting used to when you “swing back,” because it does make your stomach turn a little. Be sure to try this swing BEFORE eating.

Unfortunately, it was not yet for our children, but of course we had to watch.

Gladiator School

So this is where the gladiators are trained. Right next to the Seedrache there is training equipment for young fighters. Here, children can climb over various beautifully made wooden training devices and train their balance and stamina.

New 2012: Jumping Water

There really is jumping water in the park; it looks fantastic and has to be seen. You can find it by Die Fliegenden Fische.

It looks really funny when a small jet of water hops around the area. Many children are fascinated by the water, and this attraction invites you to marvel.

Römerturm

Another place where you can go high up and get a good overview of the park. But this carousel is for visitors who like things high but calmer. Here you can use a joystick to decide for yourself how high you dare to go. The gondolas rotate and can go up to a maximum height of 11 meters.

When you are at the very top, you have a very beautiful view of Lake Neusiedl. So it is a wonderful scenic ride for looking at the park or the surroundings.

Unfortunately, it was not yet for our children; the height probably did not seem quite safe to them.

Waldtierrennen

I liked this ride very much. Here you sit in very large animals that have their home in the forest. Large rabbits, hedgehogs, or foxes ride through the forest, where there is something to see everywhere. Here, too, you as an adult can ride with your child.

This ride was just right for our then 3-year-old twins. It is not too fast, they know the animals, and they have a lot to look at. The ride is very idyllically located in the shady fairy-tale forest.

Tractor ride

For us, the highlight of the park. Our children were beside themselves when they saw the big tractors. It was immediately clear that we would not ride here only once. Our son in particular had to ride with all the colors.

Finally, this is also a ride where the whole family can ride together: there is room for up to four people here. Two can steer at the front, but one adult has to sit at the front, because that person should press the pedal to accelerate; otherwise you drive far too slowly.

Extra tip: We had to ride here with all the colors, so plan for a lot of time again!

Schweinchenbahn

Our daughter’s favorite carousel: you sit on a little pig and ride. You watch the little pigs and, a bit farther back, you can also see the tractors driving around.

On the Schweinchenbahn it is also possible for an adult to ride along; it works very well and looks very funny to others.

Extra tip: Here, too, all saddle colors had to be tried out, so plan more time!

New 2015: Edelsteinmine

Here, little gold diggers can find treasures. Parents and children can search for beautiful semi-precious stones in the water channel with a sieve. A small bag of sand can be bought right at the stand next to it. The price is € 5 (as of April 2015). You pour it into the sieve and wash the sand away, leaving behind beautiful semi-precious stones such as rock crystal, rose quartz, fluorite, and much more.

Our children really liked this. It is simply fun to hold the sieve in the water and then fish out the glittering stones. The mine is very well laid out; thanks to large boxes, even little gold diggers can comfortably search for the treasures. If you like, you can also buy a beautiful gemstone box for € 3.50, where the treasures can be wonderfully stored.

Apfelflug

An original carousel where you take a seat in little apples. Then the carousel spins very quickly in a circle and the apples fly all around.

This carousel also has seats where two seats are next to each other, so you can sit together with your child.

Our children did not want to ride it, but I tried it. It is great that there are double seats; it is also very romantic with your partner.

Zwergenmine/Baggermine

At this station you need the park’s tokens. There are two excavators ready, which you are allowed to operate yourself.

As soon as the coin is inserted, as many balls as possible have to be scooped up within a certain time. Whoever has scooped up the most balls wins.

Of course, our children absolutely wanted to operate a “real” excavator. And I have to say, they were already very skillful!

Verrückte Vogelscheuche

Just as the name says, the scarecrow does whatever it wants. This carousel takes you very far up. But just as quickly, you are back down again.

Here you have to take a seat, and then you are pulled very quickly high up into the air, only to fall back down just as quickly.

I tried this station with my husband and I was thrilled. The free fall is really fun here. Unfortunately, it was not yet for our children.

Extra tip: You should not be afraid of heights on this carousel.

New 2013: Die Rattenmühle

Every year there is a new attraction in the Familypark, including since June 2013. Die Rattenmühle is a family roller coaster right next to Apfelflug. At up to 54 km/h, it goes crisscross through the grounds in cars that look like rats and provide space for 4 brave passengers. The roller coaster is a bobsled coaster and comes from the leading German manufacturer Gerstlauer.

We are thrilled. A really great ride, with many great climbs and, above all, fast drops. For me, a highlight of the Family Park!

New 2014: Fassltanz

Take a seat in barrels and be whirled around. That has been available in the Family Park since 2014. The barrels spin, and so does the platform on which the barrels stand. This really whirls you around nicely. Just be careful: don’t spin too much, otherwise you will get very dizzy.

• Children taller than 110 cm may ride alone

New 2015: Leonardos Flugmaschine

Here the Family Park has once again succeeded with an attraction. In Leonardo’s Flying Machine you can fly like a bird. You take a seat in comfortable chairs equipped with 2 wings. These can be turned as desired using a lever. Just be careful: depending on where the wind is coming from, moving the wings can turn you upside down. The flying machine goes up high and spins in a circle, so you can make a little nosedive again and again.

Of course, I had to “test” it and found it exceptionally good. The feeling of flying is simply wonderful. Very well done; I am thrilled. Another highlight for me in the park.

New 2016: Froschhüpfer

Right by the Wichtelsteg, 6 green tree frogs are waiting for the children. The little ones can take fun laps with them. Our children (and Andreas!) absolutely loved it; a really great carousel.

New 2016: Krähennest

Sliding is always a highlight for children (and also for young-at-heart adults). In the Familypark, right by the goats, there is now the Krähennest for sliding. Here you grab a blanket and climb up to the Krähennest. Six colorful slides are waiting here, and you can choose one. Then sit on the carpet and down you go. You will slide several times right away!

Suitable for:

• Children from 4 to 6 years old and at least 100 cm tall may slide with an adult
• Children from 6 years old and at least 120 cm tall may slide alone

New 2016: Herkules

With Herkules, there is now also a roller coaster for small children. Right by the Götterblitz, the little ones now zip around. For this attraction, you need one of the park’s tokens.

• Children taller than 120 cm or shorter than 90 cm may not ride

New 2017: Ziegengaudi

Right by and above the petting zoo “Tante Mizzi’s kleine Farm,” there are 2 climbing towers. From the viewing platforms you have a lovely view and can watch the goats. You can also see the Waldexpress and the slides from the Krähennest. Climbing or walking across a suspension bridge—great for children to let off steam.

New in 2017: Rooster Hunt

On the Rooster Hunt, children and parents can ride on a rooster. You flee on a rooster from the wacky grandma on her motorcycle. The ride goes past a manure heap, through the tractor shed and even through the farmhouse parlor. Once again, really lovely details have been set up here.

New in 2017: Forest Express

An idyllic ride awaits children and parents on the Forest Express. At the beautiful station built in 19th-century style, a steam locomotive with carriages awaits its guests. During the ride, many forest and wild animals can be observed. Here, too, the elaborate landscape design is wonderful to look at. This attraction has once again turned out very well.

On the Fairy-Tale Carousel, you take a seat on a beautiful animal and enjoy the rounds! The Fairy-Tale Carousel is located between the Fairy-Tale Forest (of course) and the Adventure Castle.

Splashing around with water? Cooling off? Then the Waterworks is the right place for you.

Get in and take off: In the Stellarium, 4 interlocking arms provide a ride high up in the air. The Stellarium is located near the entrance in the Adventure Castle area.

New in 2022: Beaver Castle

In summer 2022, the Biberburg white-water ride opened at Family Park. Here, guests experience a fast-paced ride in a log, past funny beaver scenes, before going up to a height of 17 meters in an open lift. From there you race down at an incredible 60 km/h and land in a giant splash. No one is guaranteed to stay dry – on your marks, beavers, go.

If you are arriving by car, there is a large parking lot there, which is free of charge. Children under 14 may only visit the park when accompanied by an adult (minimum age 18).

Dogs and other pets are not permitted in the Fairy-Tale Park.

Events at Familypark

Halloween

There are also always lots of events or seasonal themes at Family Park. One very special event, for example, is Halloween. For this, the park is decorated with many details to match Halloween. Pumpkins and skeletons in pretty outfits can be found throughout the park. Children's shows and a parade are held on certain days. In the evenings, there is also a large evening show. Lighting effects and decorations create a great Halloween atmosphere. On these days, the park is also open longer. It really is a great experience and something you have to see. We went for the first time in 2021 and were thrilled; admittedly, it was really packed, we were parked all the way at the very back of the parking lot and unfortunately you really do have to wait a long time at the carousels, but the decorations and the parade were absolutely fantastic. The haunted house is also an experience. Definitely go in, it's worth it!

Christmas Magic

Family Park is also worth a visit in its wintry atmosphere. Here you will find magical creatures, the Christ Child and Santa Claus, as well as many other surprises. Great for escaping the annual Christmas stress a little. The park is lovingly decorated for Christmas and you can enjoy Christmas delicacies. You can find very detailed information at Events.

Our experiences at Familypark St. Margarethen

The park is really wonderfully laid out. You can get around very well with a stroller; there are ramps everywhere and only very few steps. There are toilets on almost every corner (often even children's toilets!) with changing areas, and there is something to drink or eat everywhere.

For children, there really is everything they love: fairy tales, animals, water and sand playgrounds, plenty to climb and explore and, of course, lots of rides and carousels. We adults also become children again in this park and had lots of fun.

All we can say is: We are truly thrilled every time. The children always talk about it and always want to go back the very next day. So an outing to Family Park like this has become a fixed date in our year. We try to go there at least once a year. Since it takes us about 1.5 hours to get there from Gänserndorf, we always try to be there in the morning.

Some people may be put off by the admission price, but if you do the math after a day there, you quickly realize that the price is a very good deal. If you go to the Vienna Prater, for example, you can expect to pay at least €4 per ride. Since small children in particular like to ride the same carousel again and again (and I speak from experience!!), that can add up very quickly. And once the children are bigger, the carousels usually cost more than €4. So, by my calculations, you reach the admission price quite quickly. We always spend a whole day there, meaning until the park closes at 5 or 6 p.m., and by then we have ridden or used almost all the attractions.

But here, too, I have a few more extra tips ready for bargain hunters to help save a little money:

• Become a Friends member at Merkur become: here, with loyalty points, the admission price is €2 cheaper and the season pass is €3 cheaper!
• Every Tuesday is Senior Day, and visitors aged 60 and over pay €10 less
• Friday is Family Day and the price per person is reduced by €2
• Children under 3 are free
• Birthday surprise: anyone whose birthday is on the same day and who is no older than 14 pays no admission (don't forget your ID!)
• Season pass: For those who want to visit the park at least 3 times a year, the season pass is worthwhile
