In the heat of everyday life, we have many ideas, suggestions, or other things that need to be written down: what do I still need to buy, when do I have a doctor's appointment, when is the children's vaccination appointment, where is my next meeting? When too much information comes at us, it can happen that we forget something. To prevent this from happening, many people like to reach for small notes or Post-its.
But: these then fly around, you quickly lose track, and there is certainly no order in this system.
But help is not far away: a memo board fulfills all the criteria you need for your notes, reminders, and appointments. Whether attached to a cupboard in the kitchen or on the wall in the office – with a memo board, you can quickly record everything necessary.
Now, of course, shops or the internet offer the possibility to buy a ready-made memo board. But when you look at the prices for such a stylish board, you'd rather close the tab quickly or turn your back on the product on the shelf as soon as possible. However, this idea does not have to be discarded due to the price issue – DIY is in.
You can conjure up a memo board yourself in no time with just a few tools, and the best part is that this individual board is one of a kind. This unique piece is not only an eye-catcher, but you can also design it entirely according to your taste or the room.
What do I need for my memo board?
- 1 memo board of your choice
- 1 chalkboard paint
- 1 acrylic paint of your choice
- Napkins or stickers
Of course, you need the memo board itself. These can be found at a low cost in any good craft store. As a rule, they are thin wooden panels that leave room for a lot of imagination and ideas. In my case, my natural memo board cost €3.99.
Now you can design your memo board to your heart's content. If you prefer the wood look, you only need to brush or spray the front with clear varnish. I chose rust-brown, black, and reddish acrylic paint for my board – I set the base tone with the rust-brown paint and incorporated highlights with black and red shades while the paint was still wet. This gives the memo board a used look and makes it appear a bit more traditional.
For a small price of €3, I also purchased Chalkboard paint. Using a brush, the paint is applied two to three times in the chosen area. I intentionally didn't work neatly here and went slightly over the edge. Why? This also contributes to the used look. The board looks a bit rustic and aged – exactly how I wanted to design my memo board.
Finally, I looked at my kitchen, which is generally kept in a Mediterranean style. So, I used napkin technique to conjure various Mediterranean elements onto the memo board. An olive leaf, an oil jug, and an orange tree seemed quite fitting for my board.
Now that all the paints have dried, you can quickly write down your notes, appointments, or ingredients for the next shopping trip with simple chalk before the thought flies away again.
