Canned goods - Cans

Canned goods usually have a really long shelf life, but unfortunately I have to admit that even in my household, one or two cans expire because it is, for example, easier to take the cans from the very front. But how do I check if the can is still good? And can I keep leftovers? We have collected information here:

Tips for canned goods

How do I check if the can is still good?

To check if canned goods are still good, you first check the lid. If it bulges, then the canned food is definitely spoiled and must be disposed of. If the lid is not obviously bulging, then perform this test: Try to press the lid in with your finger. If the metal gives way and immediately snaps back, extreme caution is also advised.

Can I keep open cans?

If you want to store opened cans safely, you have to distinguish whether the can has an inner coating or not. If the can is coated, it can easily be kept in the refrigerator for 1 – 2 days.

Important: Cover with aluminum foil, or if available, put on a suitable plastic lid.

If the can is not coated, as is often the case with fruit or fish cans, then immediately transfer the contents into a well-sealing plastic container. The acids contained in the food react with the metal in the air, which would otherwise accumulate in the food.
