A particularly delicious cake should of course be kept for as long as possible. But even the best cake will eventually have to be eaten, because a homemade cake in particular is usually only shelf-stable for 2-3 days.
Cake stays fresh longer
To keep the cake fresh for longer, wrap it tightly in cling film and store it in the film for a day before cutting it. This makes it particularly soft and tender.
If you want to be on the safe side, for example with a sponge cake, simply addhalf a fresh apple under the cake dome – this will definitely keep the cake fresh.
Loaf cake stays fresh
To prevent the cut surface of a loaf cake from drying out, cut the cake in the middle. Then always store the two ends pushed together, so the cake stays nice and fresh.
Cake has dried out a bit
Firm cakes that have dried out a bit taste good again if you brush the surface with milk and briefly bake the cake in the oven.
Using up leftover cake
Are there any leftovers from a yeast dough cake? Don't throw them away immediately. If they are crumbled and mixed with melted butter, they are an ideal substitute for a shortcrust pastry base.
