Sugar rim with juice and sugar

If you want to impress your guests, you should serve your glasses with a sugar rim – also known as a crusta rim. It is simple, quick, and looks very professional. Here, I would like to give you a few tips for stylish sugar rims:

Instructions for a white sugar rim

Shopping list

  • Juice (e.g., orange juice) or lemon
  • Sugar

Moisten the glass rim

Clean and prepare the glasses for your guests. I used orange juice for my sugar rim so it wouldn't be too sour. However, you can also rub the rim with a lemon. Only moisten the part with the juice that you want to be covered in sugar. I poured the orange juice into a bowl and placed the glasses into it one by one. Be careful not to use too little juice, otherwise the sugar rim will not be even.

Sugar rim: Dip the glass into the sugar

Sugaring the glass rim

Once the glass rim is moistened with juice, place the glass upside down into a bowl of sugar. Just turn it a little, and the sugar will stick to the rim.

Afterwards, tap the glass lightly while holding it over the bowl of sugar. This allows any loose pieces to fall off immediately. Let the glasses dry a little.

Pour in the drink

Let the sugar rim dry a bit, then carefully pour the drink into the glass. Garnish with fruit or decorations and serve to your guests.

Colored sugar rim

If you want to create a colored sugar rim, it is best to use colored syrup in the matching color. However, you can also buy colored sugar in all colors.

You can also color the sugar yourself with liquid food coloring. To do this, mix the sugar with the appropriate food coloring in a screw-top jar. Spread the colored sugar on a baking sheet and let it dry. After drying, crumble it finely and put it back into the screw-top jar; this way, the sugar can also be stored.

"Glue" for glass rims

Besides lemon and orange juice, grapefruit juice as well as liqueur, syrup, or egg white are suitable as "glue" for sugar rims on sweet drinks.

Sweet ideas for glass rims

If you don't just want to use sugar, you can choose from a variety of rims; here are a few ideas:

  • white shredded coconut
  • (fine) chocolate shavings
  • brown ground coffee

Glass rims for savory drinks

If you want to offer your guests savory drinks, you can create a matching glass rim as an eye-catcher. Here are a few ideas for savory glass rims:

  • coarse salt
  • chive rolls
  • caraway seeds
  • sweet paprika powder
Feel free to try out a crusta rim; you will see, your guests will be impressed.
