In the old days, three – sometimes even four – generations often lived under one roof. The older residents, in particular, benefit from this living concept. Here, we would like to explain how to design a multi-generational household to be accessible for older and/or frail family members!

Tip 1: When the stairs become an obstacle

Living - Multi-generational householdIn houses where many family members live, living space is usually relatively clearly defined. Everyone has their own room and, of course, all family members meet regularly in the living room, in the kitchen, or in the garden. You eat together, share news, and enjoy being together. In multi-story houses, you often have to move back and forth between the individual floors. However, if an older family member is no longer able to do this, a solution must be found quickly. Those who want to rent or buy a stairlift will likely get a good deal. Ideally, the bedrooms and bathrooms of the older family members are located on the ground floor.

Tip 2: Eliminate tripping hazards

Carpet runners, door thresholds, low furniture, books stacked on the floor, and steps make life unnecessarily difficult for older people. Furthermore, falls can have devastating effects at an older age. Older residents should be able to move around all rooms without risk!

Tip 3: Safety in the bathroom

The bathroom certainly holds its pitfalls for older people. Level-access showers and bathtubs as well as a height-adjustable washbasin make daily washing easier. Non-slip mats, grab bars, and handrails, on the other hand, ensure safety. Accessibility should definitely be a top priority in the bathroom!

Tip 4: Senior-friendly electronics, furniture, and household appliances

Telephones with a clear display and correspondingly large buttons, as well as seating specially developed for seniors, can be found in every good specialist shop. Nowadays, there are also senior-friendly computers and smartphones! In addition, household appliances at eye level make annoying bending unnecessary. These everyday solutions are usually developed together with older people and are intended to enable more independence in everyday life!
