In this article, I would like to take a closer look at TCM and acupuncture. This treatment has been gaining more and more prominence for some time now, and yet there are gaps in knowledge regarding what exactly is done here and for which ailments acupuncture can be used. Unfortunately, some people are afraid of needles and do not even dare to consider this treatment.

I myself tried acupuncture during my pregnancy for my back pain and was thrilled. Especially during pregnancy, it was not possible for me to take painkillers, and this treatment came just at the right time: there are hardly any side effects, and in most cases, the pain is alleviated or even completely eliminated.

What is acupuncture?

Dr. Laber - TCM and acupuncture in SalzburgAcupuncture is a sub-area of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which assumes the existence of life energies of the body (Qi) that flow along defined longitudinal pathways (meridians). When this energy flow is disturbed, illnesses occur. In classical acupuncture, thin steel needles are inserted into precisely defined body areas (acupuncture points), which in turn lie on 12 classical meridians (energy pathways).

Which acupuncture treatments are there?

Depending on the symptoms, in a classical needle puncture, needles are distributed at specific points over the entire body and left there for a few minutes. In addition to this form, there are the following well-known forms of acupuncture:

Ear acupuncture

In this acupuncture, the needles are inserted into precisely defined ear areas. The ear is used here as a diagnostic tool, as areas on the ear are assigned to specific organs.

Electroacupuncture

In this treatment, the needles are additionally provided with clamps, which are supplied with various frequencies and current strengths from a stimulation device.

Laser acupuncture

In laser acupuncture, the acupuncture points are stimulated with a soft or mid-laser with an output of 5 to approx. 80 mW.

Moxibustion

In moxibustion, specific points on the body are heated using moxa sticks or electrical heat applications.

Acupuncture according to MASTER TUNG

This acupuncture is an independent acupuncture system and is particularly suitable for the treatment of acute pain of the musculoskeletal system.

For which ailments can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture is versatile and helps with acute and chronic pain in the following areas:

  • acute or chronic back pain
  • migraine and tension headaches
  • allergies
  • digestive disorders, irritable bowel syndrome
  • tennis elbow
  • asthma
  • chronic bronchitis
  • sinusitis
  • facial palsy
  • trigeminal neuralgia
  • pregnancy complaints

What side effects occur with acupuncture?

This is the great advantage of this treatment, because there are hardly any side effects. At the puncture sites, it can happen that a drop of blood sometimes emerges, or a small hematoma forms. Some patients may feel briefly dizzy with certain points or point combinations.
