More and more consumers are opting for LED lamps. While light-emitting diodes were only useful for displays in radios or speedometers years ago, they have now become the alternative to light bulbs. Even energy-saving lamps, which were long perceived as the only alternative, can hardly compete with LED lamps anymore. But why are LED lamps in the fast lane?
LED lamps are becoming increasingly popular
Energy costs are rising. It is therefore no wonder that more and more consumers are choosing lamps that are also energy-efficient. This is where LED lamps come into play. While a light bulb produces 12 lumens per watt, an energy-saving lamp produces 60 lumens per watt. An LED lamp produces 130 lumens per watt. Thus, the LED lamp can double its efficiency even compared to the energy-saving lamp. This value also plays a role when dealing with electricity costs. The fact is: consumers who choose LED lamps get the most light but pay the lowest electricity bill. Even if LED lamps cost between 6 and 12 euros and are therefore more expensive than halogen or energy-saving lamps, they have a much longer service life. LED lamps shine for at least 15,000 hours – the halogen lamp only shines for 2,000 hours. The acquisition costs pay for themselves after two years. In addition, consumers can look forward to savings of up to 100 euros per year.
Expensive to purchase, but unbeatable in terms of consumption
Last September, "Stiftung Warentest" tested several LED lamps, all of which had a G9 base. These were small lamps primarily used for spotlights. Four products were convincing – two products were only rated as "satisfactory". If you follow the results, a flickering (like that of an old fluorescent tube) could be detected; such "phenomena" disturb users and can trigger headaches on the one hand and cause concentration difficulties on the other. However, all six lamps were convincing in terms of power efficiency and lighting technology. But the price is not necessarily a sign that the consumer has purchased a high-quality lamp. In many cases, inexpensive LED lamps are also convincing. The fact is: although LED lamps have the highest purchase prices, they are – in the long run – the cheapest light sources currently available on the market. LED lamps have a service life of around 30,000 hours – there is no other light source that can actually keep up with this.
Attention: LED lamps must not be disposed of with residual waste
Of course, many consumers ask themselves whether they can also dim LED lamps. With light bulbs, that was no problem – light bulbs could be dimmed in such a way that a cozy and romantic light was created. Today, however, special dimmers are necessary so that the romantic light can also be achieved with an LED lamp. It should be noted that although there are many LED lamps that can be dimmed without any problems, not all LED lamps can be dimmed. For this reason, it is important that the consumer finds out in advance whether their product can also be dimmed. Another difference: LED lamps must not be disposed of with household waste!
