Household tips - Heating

Every year it's that time again, energy prices are rising and you start thinking about how you can sensibly save on heating. Since this topic is also very important to me, I would like to collect a few tips here that you can try out:

Lower the temperature

Check the temperature in all rooms; is it so warm that you can almost walk around in a T-shirt? Lower the temperature, because even a reduction of 1°C saves a lot of costs. Dress the children and yourself more warmly; the onion look (layering) is always recommended here. Thick socks and warm clothing should also be worn in the house or apartment in winter.

When we were away from home during the day, we always lowered the temperature significantly and only let it rise again in the late afternoon. However, I have already been pointed out that this doesn't really help that much, and it is better to maintain a constant temperature than to keep heating up cool rooms. It is worth trying this out to see if it makes a noticeable difference on your heating bill.

Ventilate correctly

Tilted windows, which are also located directly above the radiator or heater, are a guarantee for a high bill. Get into the habit of ventilating only briefly and, if possible, on days when the outside temperature is higher due to sunshine. It is better to ventilate briefly twice a day and close the window again quickly.

Extra tip:Unfortunately, I keep forgetting an open window: Set a kitchen timer, so you will be reminded automatically.

Check seals

Check windows and doors for leaks, e.g. with the help of a candle flame (flame flickers when there is a draft). Leaky windows and doors should be sealed with gaskets, which can be purchased cheaply at any hardware store.

Wood stove

If you have the opportunity to equip individual rooms with a wood stove, do so. Smaller amounts of wood can often be purchased cheaply. Especially in the transitional period, it is more practical to just fire up the stove than to turn on the entire heating system.
