Children love birthdays and sweets, so it is quite clear that moms always come up with something special for their little birthday children. We were invited to a dear friend's child's birthday party and we couldn't stop marveling: a beautiful train cake with loving decoration. Our children were absolutely thrilled with this great birthday cake. Especially the decorations made of sweets were very well received. Of course, my children now want such a great train cake too, and so I have the recipe for you here:
Train cake for a children's birthday party
Train cake with chocolate glaze and decoration made of fruit gums and cookies
Ingredients:
- 195 g butter
- 165 g powdered sugar
- 9 egg yolks
- 9 egg whites
- 195 g chocolate
- 195 g flour
- 165 g sugar
- 225 g jam
- Chocolate couverture (e.g., ready-made couverture from Manner, 2 packs)
- Butter for the pan
- Flour for dusting
- Haribo fruit gums
- M&M’s
- 1 Schwedenbombe (chocolate-covered marshmallow treat)
- approx. 22 round cookies
- Food coloring
- 1 loaf pan: L: 28 cm, W: 8.5 cm, H: 7 cm (the 3 wagons)
- 1 loaf pan: L: 23 cm, W: 8.5 cm, H: 8 cm (driver's cab + 1 wagon)
- Large long cardboard box
- Aluminum foil
Instructions for the cake:
Preheat the oven to 180 °C (356 °F) top and bottom heat. Grease the loaf pans with butter and dust with flour. Warm the butter until lukewarm and beat with the powdered sugar until fluffy. Gradually stir in the egg yolks. Melt the chocolate over a water bath or in the microwave and add to the egg mixture. Beat the egg whites until stiff and gradually sprinkle in the sugar. Finally, fold in the flour and mix into a smooth batter. Fill the batter into the greased and floured loaf pans and spread towards the edges so that a hollow forms in the middle. Bake the dough at 180 °C for about 1 hour.
Extra tip:If the dough has arched a little, turn the pan over onto a flat plate while still warm; this will make it smooth again.
Let the cake cool down and turn it out of the pan. Now cut the train out of the cake. For the locomotive, cut out a slightly larger rectangle and cut out a piece only halfway up to create the driver's cab. From the remaining cake, cut out smaller wagons according to your taste. You can either just cut it into pieces, or, as done here, halve the pieces to create smaller wagons. My cake didn't rise completely, so I simply made the driver's cab from the slices I cut off the sides.
Heat the jam over a water bath and spread it on the cake. For the driver's cab, I also repeatedly filled the slices with jam so that they would hold together. Also heat the couverture over a water bath and spread it on the train cake. Let everything dry well.
Instructions for the decoration
Now comes the fun part: the decoration. There are no limits to your imagination here. With food coloring, the windows can be painted on the locomotive. At the front, a Schwedenbombe is placed on top as a chimney; it is best to fix this with food coloring or jam. The light is fixed at the front with 2 yellow M&M's, also using food coloring. On the roof, gummy snakes are placed for decoration, which are also fixed with food coloring. The wheels are attached in the form of cookies with a dab of food coloring. The wagons are also topped with fruit gums and can be painted with food coloring.
If you don't have such a long plate, you can simply help yourself with cardboard and aluminum foil. Simply cut 2 long, narrow plates out of a piece of cardboard and wrap them in aluminum foil. Place the train with the wagons on this.
Extra tip:If several children are visiting, be sure to have extra portions of 'chimneys' and fruit gums ready; from experience, every child wants exactly the same thing as the other child ?
