In the household, it happens time and again that you want to check if eggs are still fresh, but how do you do that? Just looking at the expiration date is not always useful. Here I have a tip on how you can quickly check eggs:
Household tip: Testing the freshness of eggs in a glass of water
With a glass of water, it can be tested simply and quickly whether the egg is still edible or not:
- Fresh egg: The egg sinks quickly to the bottom and tips to the side
- Not a fresh egg: Egg floats with the blunt end facing up
If the egg floats with the blunt end facing up, then throw it away immediately.
If you shake the egg, you can also tell if the egg is fresh by the sound: Old eggs "gurgle" in the shell because the air chamber is larger.
