You can save a lot of energy when cooking, so I would like to present a few facts and money-saving tips here:

Save energy when baking and cooking

Cooking, frying, and baking account for around 11% of total electricity consumption.

Cooking on the stove

  • Cook on glass-ceramic or induction hobs. This will save you €45 per year.
  • Invest in efficient cookware, e.g., special steel or copper cookware: this results in savings of €9 per year.
  • Cooking with a normal pot uses twice as much electricity as a pressure cooker. In addition, there is a time saving of a good 50%.
  • An electric kettle requires only half as much electricity as boiling water in a pot.
  • Make sure that the pot and the diameter of the hob match. This brings an annual saving of €8.
  • Use an egg cooker for your breakfast egg. This saves approx. 50% energy compared to the stove.
  • Only switch on the hotplates after placing the cookware on them; this avoids unnecessary heat emission.
  • Save further electricity when cooking by switching off the hotplates earlier and using the residual heat.

Baking and roasting in the oven

  • Avoid preheating if possible.
  • You can use the residual heat at the end of the roasting or baking time and switch off the oven.
  • Keep the oven door closed while baking. Every time you open it, you consume unnecessary extra energy.
  • A convection oven is more energy-efficient than a conventional oven.

microwave

  • Heating small portions in the microwave is more energy-efficient than heating them on the stove.
