Novelty cakes are becoming increasingly popular. You could almost say that how the cake looks is more important than how it tastes. For a birthday, my friends and I tried to achieve both. We decided on a bundt cake as a teapot. You can decorate it beautifully with fondant. Here are the instructions on how we did it:
Instructions for a teapot-shaped cake
Ingredients:
- Bundt cake (we used a homemade marble bundt cake)
- Muffin or small cake (we used a small homemade cake)
- 1 kg fondant (we used the rolled fondant from allestorte.at: Rolled fondant)
- Gel colors (we used the gel colors from allestorte.at: Gel color set)
- Buttercream with butter and milk from Dr. Oetker (we only used half of this)
- Rolling pin
- Cutters and smoother for fondant (I bought this on Amazon: 45-piece CUTTERS for fondant or marzipan
)
- toothpick
- Sugar pearls, colorful (we chose 'Metallic')
Instructions for the 'teapot'
A regular bundt cake can be used here. We were lucky and got a homemade bundt cake to use. It must be well cooled so that the fondant does not melt.
Place the bundt cake on a plate where it will be served later. Insert the small cake/muffin into the hole of the bundt cake; it can stick out a little, as that will be the lid of the teapot.
We coated the bundt cake as a base with a buttercream. We used the one from Dr. Oetker and mixed it only with milk and butter. It tasted good and nothing ran or anything similar.
Instructions for decorating
Now comes the covering with fondant. If you like, you can color the fondant with food coloring now. We left the pot white because we wanted to use colorful decorations. Roll out the fondant thinly and smoothly with a rolling pin or plastic roller until it is large and round.
Place the rolled-out fondant on the bundt cake and smooth it out nicely with a smoother. Carefully remove the remains on the bottom of the plate with a knife. We decorated the bottom edge with beautiful, equally sized balls using a 'ball tool'.
We also rolled the handle and the 'spout' out of white fondant. We attached both to the bundt cake with several toothpicks.
Now comes my favorite part: the cutting. First, take the desired amount of fondant and color it. We decided on the colors red, blue, yellow, purple, and pink.
For cutting, we used special cutters for marzipan/fondant. It was very easy, and we created many different patterns: flowers, leaves, and butterflies. We partially placed the sugar pearls in the flowers. For the teapot, we also rolled a long string and a ball out of fondant for the lid.
We attached the decorations to the teapot with very little water. We also distributed the string and the ball on the bundt cake with a little water. Since we wanted to serve this cake at a birthday party with many children, we made a lot of decorations, because experience shows that every child wants to snack on at least one decoration. (Of course, I also have to admit that we enjoyed the cutting part especially and could hardly stop ourselves – but I think the explanation with the children is better, of course :-)). So we placed the remaining decoration on the plate for free taking.
This cake is a joint project of mine and my dear friends. Beate baked the cake, and Maria and I decorated it together. The birthday surprise was a great success!
If anyone has suggestions or information on this, I would be very happy to receive comments.
