Instructions for a baby bump cake with fondant

A cake shaped like a baby bump – I discovered this on the internet and wanted to bake it immediately. After searching for some recipes and bowls, the right occasion finally came along. Here I have summarized our sometimes difficult experiences:

Instructions for a baby bump cake with fondant

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg fondant (we used the rolled fondant from allestorte.at: Rolled fondant)
  • Gel colors (we used the gel colors from allestorte.at: Gel color set)
  • Apricot jam
  • Rolling pin
  • Cutters and smoothers for fondant (I bought this set on Amazon: 45-piece CUTTERS for fondant or marzipan)
  • 3 round, spherical cakes, 2 small and 1 large (e.g., a Cup cake or a sponge cake)
  • Round bowls (we used the BLANDA bowls from Ikea)

Bake a baby bump motif cake yourself

I have to say that we had big problems with the cake here. We found the instructions for this cake on the internet, but unfortunately, baking in the large bowl didn't work. The cake was either too dry or raw, and we tried it 3 times! The original plan was a sponge cake with pudding. Since our sponge cake turned out very small, we made a large chocolate mug cake for the belly. That's why we made 2 different doughs that finally worked for us. Unfortunately, I can't say now whether it was the dough or the bowls. Many people also bake the dough in a large glass bowl.

The recipe for the Sponge cake was as follows:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 120 g sugar
  • 120 g flour
  • 1 pack of vanilla pudding
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Beat the eggs with the salt and sugar until very frothy, until it becomes a cream. Only then fold in the remaining ingredients and mix well. Grease the molds well and pour in the dough. Bake the whole thing at 190°C (374°F) top/bottom heat for about 25 minutes.

It is best to check again and again with a wooden stick to see if the dough is already done and not getting too dark. When it is cooked through, turn the molds onto a wire rack and let the cakes cool down well.

If the cakes have become a bit uneven, simply cut off the annoying bulges with a knife.

Now comes the fun 'work' again: decorating with fondant.

Baby bump cake - zebra pattern made of fondant

We decided on a dress with a zebra pattern. There are tons of ideas and templates on the internet, feel free to browse here.

Arrange the cakes correctly on a large plate and coat with a cream or jam. We decided on apricot jam.

First, make the décolleté. We tried to color the fondant in a flesh tone, but it turned out rather yellowish for us. Roll out the fondant well again and place it on the 2 small cakes. Carefully remove excess fondant on the plate with a knife.

For the zebra pattern, first roll out the white fondant into a rectangle the size of the 3 cakes. Then color a small part of the fondant with black food coloring. Roll out the black fondant as well and use a knife to cut out strips of different lengths and thicknesses. Place these strips on the white fondant. Now carefully roll over the white & black fondant with a rolling pin. The black strips should now be just as smooth as the white fondant and hold well. If not, simply moisten with a little water and 'glue' onto the white fondant.

It is best to roll the fondant onto a rolling pin and place it on the cake. Cut off excess edges with a knife. The dress can certainly have a few folds and also be a bit more on the sides.

We also made 2 pink flowers for the dress. To do this, we colored a little fondant pink, rolled it out smoothly, and cut it out with a fondant cutter. We attached these flowers to the 'dress' with a little water.

This cake is a joint project by me and my dear friend Maria. Maria baked the cakes, and Maria and I decorated them together.

If you have already had experience with the 'baby bump' motif cake and can give us good tips, I would be happy to receive comments or emails.
