Pregnancy is not always a beautiful time. Every now and then, certain risk factors or sudden complications can endanger the health of the pregnant woman. It can happen that a pregnancy must be terminated for medical reasons. In Austria, this is legal up to the 22nd week of pregnancy. Reasons for an abortion can be a danger to the mother's life, or if the child suffers from embryopathy (is severely mentally or physically disabled). In public hospitals, abortions are only performed if it is necessary for medical reasons – i.e., for the health of the mother. For women in need, the costs for a pregnancy termination are covered by the Municipal Department 40 – Social, Social and Health Law.
