Cleaning waffle irons easily

A waffle iron can be really nerve-wracking – at least when it comes to cleaning it. There are numerous indentations, corners, and angles that all need to be cleaned. After all, dough residues and fats should not simply be left in the waffle iron. For hygienic reasons, the iron must be cleaned after every use before it is stored back in the cupboard, where it waits for its next use. But simply putting it in the dishwasher or the sink basically means the death of any waffle iron. Aggressive cleaners or the green, rough side of a household sponge are definitely taboo. They destroy the Teflon coating of the waffle iron and make the iron unusable. Cleaning by hand is unavoidable – but what can you do to ensure this fiddly work doesn't become too time-consuming? And how can I best preserve the Teflon?

Cleaning tips for waffle irons

(New!) toothbrush for cleaning

To clean a waffle iron easily, a (new!) toothbrush is excellent, because it allows you to get into every crevice.

Extra tip: Until the next use, just place one or two layers of paper towels in the waffle iron. These absorb excess fat residues and also protect the Teflon.
