Marzipan

A fun idea for something sweet on New Year's Eve is small decorated muffins or doughnuts (also called 'Berliner').

Lucky mini muffins for New Year's Eve

What you’ll need:

  • Mini muffins, mini cakes, or mini doughnuts
  • 250 g powdered sugar
  • 1 egg white or 6 tbsp lemon juice or water or other juice
  • 75 g marzipan
  • Food coloring, red, green

Instructions:

For this original pastry, either use store-bought mini cakes, muffins, or mini doughnuts, or bake them yourself. Mix the powdered sugar and juice to make a sugar glaze.

Marzipan lucky charms

Color the marzipan as desired and cut out lucky charms: cut out shamrocks or horseshoes from the green marzipan (small cookie cutters can be found, for example, in the kitchen accessories department of furniture stores or on Amazon), cut out mushrooms from the red marzipan and decorate them with small dots of powdered sugar glaze.

To make little pigs, color the marzipan only slightly with red to make it pink. Then roll it out and cut out 5 large and 5 small circles, and cut out 2 small triangles for each. Using a little water, stick the 2 small triangles onto the large round circle as ears and place the small round circle on top as a snout (carefully scratch 2 small round nostrils into it with a knife). Dab on the eyes as dots using powdered sugar glaze and decorate with very small dark chocolate lentils as pupils.

Brush the pastries with the powdered sugar glaze, let them dry a little, then place the marzipan motifs on top and let them dry.

If that is too much effort, you can also decorate the mini cakes with sprinkles, pearls, or Smarties to create lucky charms. One possibility is, for example, to arrange 4 Smarties like a shamrock on the sugar glaze, or to form a horseshoe with the pearls. There are no limits to your imagination!
