A healthy snack is expected by parents in many schools or kindergartens. Here, a different parent is chosen each week to bring a healthy snack for the whole group or class. Many parents ask themselves what to bring, and above all, how much?
Ideas for a healthy snack for school or kindergarten
For children or school classes, many types of vegetables and fruits are excellent for a healthy snack. These should be easy and quick to eat and also last for a few days. However, make sure to pay attention to seasonal and regional fruit and vegetables. After all, grapes from Chile in December will hardly have many vitamins left after such a long journey. Here we have a few ideas for which fruit and vegetables are well-received and easy to eat:
Fruit for a healthy snack
Depending on the season, we have suggestions for fruit as a healthy snack here:
- Strawberries
- Raspberries
- Blueberries
- Cherries
- Nectarines, in wedges
- Grapes, already removed from the stem
- Apples, cut into wedges
- Pears, cut into wedges
- Bananas
- Mandarins, already peeled and divided into segments
- Melon, either in wedges or as pieces with a toothpick
Vegetables for a healthy snack
Depending on the season, we have suggestions for healthy vegetables as a snack here:
- Cucumber cut into slices
- Carrots cut into sticks
- Cocktail tomatoes
- Bell pepper strips
- Kohlrabi strips
- Radishes (but these are usually too spicy for children)
The quantity for fruit and vegetables is more difficult. For a school class of 24 children, I would plan for 6-7 kg of fruit and vegetables. If you have the time, you can also put different fruits on small skewers. For older children, the apples can be left whole or only partially cut so that they last longer. For kindergarten children, cut everything into bite-sized pieces and choose more digestible fruit and vegetables.
Other items for a healthy snack
- Nut mixes
- Small drinking yogurt bottles like Actimel bottles
- Muesli bars (without chocolate and pay attention to the sugar content!)
- Cheese, either small balls or string cheese
- Small Cabanossi sausages
- Small skewers with sausage, cheese, cucumber, grapes, mozzarella, tomato, etc.
Bread for children as a snack
If you want to make sandwiches for the class or kindergarten group, you can count on about 3 kg of bread for 24 children. These can be spread with light spreads, such as herb, vegetable spreads, or hummus. Ham or cheese is also a popular bread topping among children.
Vegetables such as tomato slices, bell pepper strips, cucumber slices, hard-boiled egg slices, or herbs such as chives or cress as well as healthy sprouts are suitable for decoration.
It is best to arrange the vegetables in a fun way, e.g., as a face or nicely colorful; children love it when food has color and looks funny. It can happen that children who never eat fruit or vegetables at home will dig in heartily.
Definitely pay attention to this: do not bring any sweets or sugary drinks or sodas; it is a misconception to think you are doing the children a favor.
