Halloween is also being celebrated more and more in Austria. Not only do children get to collect candy, they also have to dress up for it. Always a highlight for kids. We have also dived into the Halloween fever – those who know me know that I love to decorate, and not just the whole house, but also the food. So for me, it's a welcome event to liven up autumn a little and throw a party. In my friend Maria, I have found someone who shares the joy of decorating with me and even tops it. Here I would like to show you our Halloween decorations and perhaps even inspire you with them:
Halloween decorations for a children's party
Spooky atmosphere with store-bought spider web
What you’ll need:
- white or colored spider web (e.g., at Libro, Pagro, Tedi or Amazon etc.)
- Plastic spiders (e.g., at Libro, Pagro, Tedi or Amazon etc.)
Instructions:
Take the spider web out of the packaging and stretch it a little so that it is thinner and laid out more in strips. Then find a suitable place for it. It holds very well over shelves or over a row of pictures. Keep stretching and pulling the web and pull it over the desired pieces of furniture. Place the plastic spiders into the web. Ours hold just like that, without any aids.
Extra tip: A spider web can also be bought in colors other than white: orange or purple also look very good.

Buy fun Halloween decorations
There are already many beautiful things to buy Halloween decorations for the home. My latest acquisition is this witch with the colorful stockings and the great skirt, which hangs on our front door. But there is now also a very large selection for standing up, window pictures, and for the garden. Have a browse, you will surely find something. Here I have photographed a few examples for you of how my friend Maria or I decorate for Halloween.
Also fun are stickers for Halloween. My friend treated herself to one here that you can also easily peel off again:
The Table decoration for Halloween can be fancy and spooky. Black plastic tablecloths with creepy accessories like spiders, ghosts, or pumpkins offer a nice ambiance for a Halloween party.
Extra tip: We like to buy things AFTER Halloween in the clearance sale.

Make Your Own Halloween Pumpkin
The classic that shouldn't be missing:
What you’ll need:
- Pumpkin, ripe and without bruises
- Spoon
- Carving knife (available at the hardware store)
- CD marker
- tea light
Instructions for a Halloween pumpkin:
First, cut off the lid of the pumpkin in the lower third and scrape out the pulp with the spoon. Only a shell of about 2 cm should remain. Use the CD marker to draw your personal pattern on the shell. It is best to start with simple patterns, such as circles or squares. Then use the carving knife to cut along the sketched lines, remove the cutout, and now just place the tea light in the pumpkin – your own unique pumpkin is ready.

Spooky atmosphere with homemade spider web
What you’ll need:
- Wool threads in white or black (e.g., in stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, MĂĽller or at Amazon)
- Plastic spiders (e.g., at Libro, Pagro, Tedi, MĂĽller, toy stores or Amazon etc.)
Instructions:
If you don't want to buy a spider web and would rather make one yourself, you only need wool and a place where you can hang it up well. There must be possibilities for tying it down. My friend Maria tied this spider web to a floor lamp. Cut 4 individual threads of approximately the same length and lay them out like the inside of a tire. Always knot the threads in the middle so that it looks like a sun. Now start in the middle and always form an inner circle from one spoke to the next and knot this firmly to a spoke. Continue this until the web has enough circles.
Hang the whole thing up well with a wool thread at several ends and place the spider(s) inside.

Spooky atmosphere with creepy dolls
What you’ll need:
- old dolls
- acrylic markers
- black doll clothes
Instructions:
Paint the dolls spookily with the markers as you like. Dress the dolls in black, white, or dark red. Set them up and the decoration is finished.
Extra tip: look for old dolls on willhaben or flea markets.

Make a Halloween signpost
What you’ll need:
- Boxes
- Acrylic markers or permanent marker
- acrylic paints
- Paintbrush
- Scissors or utility knife
- Wooden slat
- Glue
Instructions:
Cut out signpost signs from the cardboard and prime them with acrylic paint and a brush. Write mystical or spooky places like Gotham City, Hogwarts, or Mystic Falls with an acrylic marker. Glue the signposts onto the wooden slat.

Make a tombstone yourself for Halloween
What you’ll need:
- 1 large cardboard box
- acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
Instructions:
Prime the cardboard with a gray paint and let it dry. Then paint lettering and decoration with black paint as you like. Let everything dry well. The Halloween tombstone is ready to be set up.

Candles for Halloween decoration
What you’ll need:
- Candles in white
- Candles in red
- Lighter
- Base: e.g., newspaper, cardboard, etc.
Instructions:
Place the white candles on a base where you can drip candle wax, e.g., a piece of cardboard or newspaper. Light the red candle and let the candle wax drip onto the white candles. When there is enough, blow out the candle and let the wax dry well. The Halloween candle is finished.

Make Halloween pom-poms from napkins
What you’ll need:
- at least 3-ply napkins in the matching color (you can also mix several colors!)
- pin
- yarn
Instructions:
Cut the desired napkins apart on the folded side so that they lie in front of you in a rectangular shape. Now, with the help of a pin, completely detach the individual layers of the napkins. The napkin layers are now placed on top of each other as accurately as possible in the desired color and order. Here, for example, multi-colored napkins can be alternated. We decided on single-colored pom-poms and made them in white.
Now fold the layers like a fan, i.e., alternately fold in approx. 2 cm on the broad side. Tie this fan firmly in the middle with a thin thread; this thread is no longer visible afterwards. Now the individual layers are pulled out towards the middle; caution is required here so that these thin layers do not tear. Once all layers have been detached individually, the pom-pom is finished and ready to be hung up. Maria put this pom-pom on a floor lamp and decorated it with spiders and bats.

Spiders from Nespresso capsules
What you’ll need:
- Cleaned Nespresso capsules
- Eye stickers (e.g., stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, MĂĽller or Tedi or at Amazon)
- Colored pipe cleaners ((e.g., stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, MĂĽller or Tedi or Amazon)
- Glue (e.g., in stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, MĂĽller or at Amazon)
- Scissors (e.g., in stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, MĂĽller or at Amazon)
Instructions:
It is best to remove the filter of the Nespresso capsule with a utility knife, remove the coffee, and clean the capsule. Turn the capsule over (place it on the flat side) and stick the eyes onto the capsule. For the feet, cut 8 strips of the same length from the pipe cleaner and glue them to the capsule and bend them so that they look like spider legs.

Ghosts from napkins
What you’ll need:
- Napkins in white (e.g., in stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, at MĂĽller, at furniture stores like Ikea, Lutz, Kika or Amazon)
- Edding marker in black (e.g., in stationery stores like Pagro, Libro, at MĂĽller, or at Amazon)
- Thread in white (e.g., at MĂĽller or Amazon)
- Newspaper
- Tape (e.g., in stationery stores like Pagro, Libro or MĂĽller or Amazon)
Instructions:
Form a large ball the size of a tennis ball from the newspaper. Unfold the napkin and place it over the newspaper ball. Tie the head of the ghost firmly with a thread. Paint eyes, mouth, scars, etc., with a black marker. So that you can hang the ghost up, fix a thread to the head with a piece of tape and hang it over the table.

Creepy monster in the middle of the room
What you’ll need:
- Monster mask (available seasonally e.g., at Libro, or on Amazon)
- Coat or cape or bed sheet
- Floor lamp
- possibly string or adhesive tape
Instructions:
It gets really creepy when a monster is actually standing in the middle of the living room. For this, a large floor lamp is dressed up. The monster mask is placed over the floor lamp and the coat or bed sheet is tied underneath (best with a string or adhesive tape).

Creepy monster on the toilet
What you’ll need:
- Monster mask (available seasonally e.g., at Libro, or on Amazon)
- Coat or shirt
- large (ski) gloves
- Clothes hanger (available at MĂĽller or at Amazon)
- possibly safety pins
Instructions:
A monster can also hide on the toilet. For this, place the mask on a clothes hanger and hang the shirt or long coat underneath. Attach gloves to the sleeves. With us, the gloves held just like that, but you can also use safety pins. Mount or stick the finished 'monster' to the ceiling or to a cabinet behind it using string.

Broom parking for Halloween decor
What you’ll need:
- Hooks
- Broom
- Cardboard box
- Acrylic marker
- Scissors, or utility knife
Instructions:
Here you need various brooms that you hang on a hook rail or hooks. To do this, cut out a sign from cardboard and write 'Broom Parking' with the marker. Hang the sign next to the brooms.
Extra tip: Can be done, for example, in the cloakroom with the hooks.

Mark crime scene
What you’ll need:
- Masking tape
Instructions:
It is best if a child lies on the floor, tape the outline of the child with adhesive tape. It's funny if, for example, they stretch out an arm or a leg. Looks really cool.
Corpse in the bathtub
- Bathtub
- black garbage bags
- Adhesive tape
- Belt
- Shoes
- Clothes/towels or similar
Instructions:
Heeelp a corpse in the bathtub – this decoration is really only for strong nerves :-). Whoever dares to do it like us, read on: Stuff the garbage bags with clothes or towels so that they look like a body with a head. Fix the whole thing all around with adhesive tape and/or with a belt. The whole thing goes into the bathtub and the shoes are added at the foot end. Looks like real, right??

Halloween decoration upside-down witch
What you’ll need:
- Trousers
- Rubber boots
- Towels, scarf as filling material
- Raven
- Flower pot
Instructions:
Fill the trousers with towels, scarves, etc., and stick them upside down into the flower pot. Put the boots on the legs. Put the raven on top of the boots. Looks really cool.

Halloween decoration pitchfork with mask
What you’ll need:
- Mask
- Pitchfork
Instructions:
Spear the mask onto the pitchfork and deposit it at the door or in the garden. Looks super creepy.
