For his children's birthday party this year, my son wanted a soccer cake. After doing a bit of research online, it was to be a general soccer cake. There were some really lovely decorating ideas for it, and the instructions were not all soooo complicated. Here I have summarized my instructions for our soccer cake:
Instructions for a soccer cake with fondant
Ingredients:
- 1 kg green Fondant (we used the rolled fondant from allestorte.at: Rolled fondant)
- approx. 100 g white Fondant (depends on the thickness of the lines, and whether letters will be added)
- (Anyone who buys white fondant can also color it however they like with the gel colors from allestorte.at: Gel color set)
- 1 cake (e.g. a Cup cake or a sponge cake)
- Any ganache, I made the recipe for milk chocolate
- large work mat/fondant mat
- rolling pin for the fondant
- sugar paste extruder, I used a small round opening
- soccer decoration: plastic goals and players, soccer candles
- cake pan: rectangular
- cake board, or transport box for cakes
- possibly letter cutters
Instructions:
We decided on a chocolate mug cake and baked it in the morning. For my large pan from Ikea, I made and baked double the quantity. (Note: let it bake longer with double the amount!). Only after it had cooled well did we start decorating in the afternoon. To do this, mix the ganache and let it cool down or harden a little. It is best to spread the ganache on the cake with a dough scraper. Also let the ganache dry slightly.
Then we rolled out the whole green piece of fondant on the large work mat with a rolling pin for fondant.
Caution: The fondant should not be rolled out too thinly so that it does not tear.
Extra tip: Since the cake was so large, I put it straight into the transport box and also covered it with fondant there right away.
With the help of the rolling pin, we placed the fondant on the cake and pressed it down well with the smoother. Carefully cut off the overhanging lower edge with a knife. Clean pieces of fondant can still be used for further decoration or another cake.
The decoration:
Of course, the white lines also had to be added to the soccer cake. For this, we used a sugar paste extruder. This is a ‘metal syringe’ where you can place a suitable stencil at the opening – in our case one with a small round hole – put in some white fondant and turn the crank. It is best to ‘pipe’ the lines directly onto the cake, because unfortunately they tear quite easily when they are so thin. Adjust the lines to the other decorations (e.g. the goals) and place them on the cake or attach them with a very little water or sugar glue.
Extra tip: Anyone who wants to can of course also cut out the birthday child's name from fondant (e.g. white fondant). For the lettering, roll out the fondant in the desired color and cut it out with the desired letters. Place the letters on the cake and press them down a little.
We then added some fondant to the underside of the goals and players and stuck them onto the cake. I also added soccer candles and a number candle for the year to the cake.
Extra tip: To keep the cake from getting too hard, carefully wrap it in cling film and keep it cool until serving.
I have to say, I really liked the cake myself too; it was a lovely idea from my son and was not soooo hard to make. The children at the birthday party were also thrilled.
