The avocado did not find its way from Mexico to Europe until the beginning of the 16th century. Today, the fruits are grown in the southern United States, southern Africa, Spain, and Israel. The fruits are harvested unripe – much like bananas. This is the only way they can survive the long journey to our kitchens. At room temperature in a paper bag, the fruits continue to ripen – this process can be shortened by adding an apple. The avocado is ready to eat when the skin gives way to finger pressure.

The avocado is a versatile fruit

The fruits are not only used in the kitchen but also as a natural remedy. Due to the very high content of vitamin B6, the fruit strengthens the immune system. In addition, the fruit contains biotin and potassium as well as magnesium and high-quality protein with the most important amino acids. Biotin promotes skin development, strengthens hair roots, and ensures firm fingernails. The avocado contains a lot of potassium but very little sodium. This means that it can even be used in diets for people suffering from heart and kidney diseases, high blood pressure, and skin conditions. The fruit also supports muscle building with its magnesium content. It is therefore an all-around healthy fruit. Furthermore, the fruit contains vitamins A and E as well as a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. This makes the fruit better than any cosmetic and extraordinarily valuable as a natural remedy.

The avocado is also ideal for salads and fillings

Once the fruit is ripe, it can be eaten like any other fruit. To do this, the avocado must be opened with a knife, cutting the fruit lengthwise down to the pit. Then the fruit is twisted so that you have two halves that can be easily spooned out. There is no need to be afraid of too much fat, even though the fat content is 23.5% per 100 grams – these are polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are very healthy for the body.

As a fruit salad accompanied by oranges and bananas, the avocado is a taste experience. It is also extremely popular as a creamy dessert with almonds, seasoned savory. The fruit can always be served, as it has only 220 kilocalories (per 100 grams) and is perfectly suitable even for those who are currently on a diet. Anyone who wants to have their own little avocado tree also has a chance of success. To do this, the thick end of the pit must be placed in a glass of water. To prevent the pit from sinking completely, matches inserted into the pit serve as anchors to hold it on the rim of the glass.
