Feng Shui refers to the Chinese philosophy of harmony, which aims to bring people into harmony with their surroundings. The origin of the teaching lies in Taoism, a religion widely practiced in China. Feng Shui is known worldwide for its precisely designed garden and interior design.
The traditional form of Feng Shui begins with the selection of the plot of land.
Anyone who wants to have a house built is faced with the task of finding a building site protected by the surrounding landscape. Qi is the positive or negative life energy that is determined by the location, age, and surrounding nature of a building.
The teaching of the five elements
The eight trigrams divide the environment into elemental areas that influence different areas of life. Earth, water, fire, metal, and wood form the teaching of the five elements in Taoism. They represent the areas of life and their effects. The geographical location in the garden, for example, separates the areas of health, career, knowledge, family, or creativity from one another.
For example, through decorations from the water element, such as a fountain or a pond, in the southeastern part of the garden, positive Qi is created for the area of money and finances according to Feng Shui. The western section of the garden is suitable for play areas, as it stands for children and creativity. Curved paths and round shapes are also conductors of positive Qi. They create harmony.
Color theory also plays a role in garden design according to Feng Shui. Positive energy increases if the color scheme is subject to the teaching of the five elements. In the southern part of the garden, the fire element is supported by planting red flowers. In contrast, bright yellow tones reinforce the positive energy of the earth area in the southwest.
Have a house built – but how?
Just like garden design, the energy of the house is determined not only by the surroundings but also by the arrangement of individual components. Unnecessary furnishing elements have no place in the garden or the house, in order to give the energy as much space as possible to spread. The different room energy of a sleeping area compared to a workspace, for example, recommends their separation.
