The fascination has existed for a long time and dates back to 3,000 BC in Ancient Egypt. According to archaeological research, the first ancestor of the domestic cat is the African wildcat. It is assumed that the wildcats, attracted by the mice and rats present, sought the proximity of grain stores.
By eliminating the rodents, they gained great popularity among the population. Since there were few natural enemies near humans, the chances of reproducing were much greater. Cats born near humans had the chance to be taken in and cared for by them. It is thanks to their usefulness that the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats as god-like. If you look at drawings from this time, you will notice that the sun god Ra is depicted with a cat's head.
How did the cat get from Africa to Europe?
The Egyptians tried with all their might to prevent the export of their beloved cats. But the Greeks managed to steal cats to get their rodent and vermin problem under control. The first cat appeared in Europe around 900 BC. In later years, the Egyptians decided to sell the cats to the Romans, Gauls, and Celts. This extended the spread of the cat worldwide. At first, only the emperor owned cats, later the nobility was also granted the possession of cats, then the priests, and subsequently the ordinary citizen as well.
The fortune of cats changed over the years. They were associated with diseases and misdeeds. It was said that they were in league with the devil. In the 17th century, the tide turned. Cats were used as mousers on ships. In the Victorian era, cats regained their status as pets. In 1871, the first breeding exhibition for British Shorthair and Persian cats took place in London. At the same time, the Maine Coon was presented at the first cat show in the USA.
The cat today
The cat is one of the most popular pets alongside the dog. People appreciate that cats do not subordinate themselves and have a mind of their own. Cats are very proud animals and show it. Due to their immense wisdom and independence, cats will certainly have a long existence.
