Making wool pom-poms with yarn

A fluffy wool pom-pom can be made yourself with simple means. It's a nice craft to do with children when the weather is bad outside. The children can then use them to decorate their room nicely or simply use them as toys. Here are my instructions for making a wool pom-pom yourself:

Make your own wool pom-pom

What you need:

  • Wool
  • Cardboard box
  • Scissors
  • possibly a compass or pen

Instructions:

First, draw 2 circles of the same size on the cardboard. This works very well with a compass and makes it more even. But it doesn't have to be that precise. We used circles with a diameter of approx. 7 cm. Then draw another circle inside the circle. Set a diameter of approx. 5 cm with a compass. Of course, you can make the circle as large as you want. The larger it is, the larger the wool pom-poms will be.

Now choose the wool for the wool pom-pom. It can be designed in one color, but also with many different colors. Cut off as much wool as you want to use for it. Place the cardboard rings on top of each other and tie the wool thread tightly. To avoid tangling, the thread can also be wrapped around your fingers again and again so that you get a small ball of wool.

Now wrap the wool around the cardboard rings again and again. Simply place the end under the threads, or if you like, tie it with a knot. If you want it more colorful, tie the next thread around the cardboard ring and wrap the threads around the ring again. Continue until you have enough, or you can no longer get the threads through the hole in the middle.

Once you have used enough wool for your taste, cut the threads at the edge with scissors. Cut deep enough until you reach the cardboard and it becomes visible.

To hang up the wool pom-pom, take a longer piece of wool in the desired color. Wrap this once between the 2 cardboard rings and tie 2 tight knots. The cardboard rings can now be removed and any protruding threads of the pom-pom can simply be trimmed to the same length with scissors.
