Children's rooms tend to end up in constant chaos. No sooner have you tidied everything away than it looks like a bomb has gone off again. But here are a few little tricks to prevent that a bit.
Ideas and tips for organizing the children's room
How does the child see the children's room?
Try to put yourself in the child's shoes. How do children see the room? Since they are much smaller than an adult, they naturally cannot reach everything so easily. The furniture is too big and too high, little ones can easily pinch their fingers in sliding doors, or if you push them only from the very bottom, they might even jump out. If the toy boxes are too big, everything quickly gets mixed up because the child was looking for something. Do the drawers really open that easily if you only have half the strength?
What equipment for the children's room?
In children's rooms for small children, it is best to remove cabinet doors entirely so they cannot pinch their fingers. It is great if you can hang the clothes rail lower and fill it with children's hangers. This way, the offspring can take the clothes out themselves, but also hang them back up. Socks and underwear can easily be found in open plastic boxes. Toys are also best kept in open containers that are not too big or too high.
How should the children's room be organized in a child-friendly way?
The younger the child, the lower the most important things should be placed. Things that are not used as often move up the shelves, and what is in high demand is best left in open boxes on the floor. It is important to follow this principle: It should be easier for the offspring to put something away than to take it out. A good example is books. On a shelf, it is easier for a child to clear the whole shelf than to put a book back. Therefore, put the books upright in a plastic box; this way, they are more likely to take them out one by one.
How do you get the child to tidy up by themselves?
To avoid losing track of all the boxes, labels are very important. And here, too, write them according to the child's age. So, graphic labels for toddlers, such as: pictures of socks, cars, dolls, building blocks, etc. For older children, provide the labels with nice large block letters so they can practice reading. The labels are also well-suited for sticking onto shelves, on and in drawers, and baskets. You can then turn it into a game of what belongs to which label, which will surely be fun for the little ones because they can act actively themselves.
How do you get the child to tidy up again and again?
It is also very important for children to create routines. A constant change between order and chaos in the children's room does not please the children either and frustrates them. Therefore, always incorporate the same tidying actions into the daily routine, which will eventually become a routine. For example, in the morning, always put the previous day's clothes in the laundry basket; in the evening, stow the toys in the shelves and boxes (label game!).
From experience, I know that it is not easy to keep the children's room tidy at all times. But with a little routine and playful influence, the children usually join in. Do you have another idea for tidying up with children? Great – then please leave a comment or write an email!
