Woman sad and desperate

Health is our most important asset. This is usually assumed to refer to physical illnesses, but our soul can also become ill. Many do not want to admit this to themselves or perceive it as a weakness. In the case of traumatic or very stressful experiences, as well as anxieties or stress of any kind, one sometimes cannot help oneself anymore and needs external help. This support can be found in a psychotherapist. Psychotherapist in Gänserndorf Sandra Weber supports children, adolescents, and adults in difficult life situations and crises with psychosomatic conditions. In an interview, she gives us insights into her work as a psychotherapist, how she came to this profession, what her main areas of work are, and what she would still like to achieve:

Interview with psychotherapist from Gänserndorf Sandra Weber

How did you come to your profession as a psychotherapist?

Via detours – the psyche has always fascinated me – my professional roots are originally in the financial industry. However, the interest in the human psyche never let me go, and so I decided to train as a psychotherapist on the side.

In the jungle of different therapeutic approaches, the behavioral therapy approaches ultimately met my personal values the most.

What prompted you to choose this particular profession?

Already during my childhood and later also my youth, I asked myself the question of why people develop a very specific, unique character and how their personality develops from it.

Why do people behave so differently and why do people think so differently? Can you change yourself, your thought and behavioral patterns – and if so – how? Which mechanisms must be activated, how do you manage to grow beyond yourself and your own limits? Or do you remain trapped in your own skin – for a lifetime?

In the human psyche, there is nothing that does not exist. The psyche is infinitely profound and so individual – I am fascinated by the different facets that a person carries within themselves. How should I put it? It just never gets boring ? and as I said, there is nothing that does not exist!

What special skills do you think are required in this profession?

A good therapist should never stop questioning and reflecting on themselves.

Apart from that, for me, empathy, sensitivity, patience, tolerance, neutrality, and good boundaries are helpful skills that should accompany therapeutic work with the patient.

Who comes to your practice?

In short: from young to old, from big to small, from thick to thin, from healthy to sick ?

I accompany children and adolescents, as well as adults in difficult life situations, crises, with mental or psychosomatic conditions.

Psychotherapy is also a useful opportunity for self-discovery for people who primarily want to know and understand themselves better, as well as a help for problems in the partnership or family.

Furthermore, managers, teams, and companies also come with various questions in the sense of team and individual supervision or coaching.

How does the treatment work?

If you decide to work with me after the initial consultation, the first sessions are designed as a “diagnostic phase”. After a detailed diagnosis, a concept is created which should lead to improvement.

Furthermore, goals are set to see what progress the patient has made in the course of the sessions. Each concept is individually adapted to the patient and depends on the problem, the needs, and the individual goals.

The individual strengths and abilities of the patient are activated, or newly learned, and help in achieving the set goals.

The focus is on internal processes such as thoughts, feelings, and the subsequent physical reactions. The patient should develop a better understanding of themselves.

How long the joint work lasts depends on the problem, the goals, and the frequency of the joint sessions.

What is the goal of therapy?

In the case of a mental illness, many factors play a major role. These include genetic conditions, as well as the triggering factors of the illness and also the maintaining conditions of the illness.

These are to be uncovered and changed in the course of therapy together with the patient. The patient should develop a better understanding of themselves.

Are there any focal points in your work?

  • Burnout
  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxieties (panic attacks, specific phobias)
  • Obsessions
  • Eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia, binge eating),
  • Psychosomatic disorders

I really enjoy working with people who are motivated to change something. This also requires some courage to engage with something new. Thus, a very exciting journey of discovery to oneself can happen.

Then the therapy runs almost by itself – I only accompany! ?

What is your greatest professional success?

The greatest sense of achievement that my work as a psychotherapist can give me is the visible improvement in the condition of my patients. This result usually occurs when the patient gains a better understanding of themselves.

I only help the patient to activate their previously hidden resources and abilities (which are uncovered and activated in the course of treatment) themselves, which then serve to break through habitual behavioral patterns. The patient does everything else themselves!

What goal do you still want to achieve in your profession?

I have been playing with the idea for a long time of setting up my own therapy center, therapeutic residential community, or something similar, in which people with mental illness can find a space for rehabilitation and treatment.

What costs should one expect for psychotherapy?

From € 90 upwards per therapy session.
