If you want to enjoy your coffee machine for as long as possible, you should clean it thoroughly at regular intervals. Especially with classic filter coffee machines, it is important that they are cleaned and, above all, descaled from time to time. Before you start cleaning, you should find out which descaler is suitable and which parts of the coffee machine are removable so that they can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
What to keep in mind when cleaning coffee machines
Descaler or vinegar?
If your coffee machine has a milk frother, for example, it should ideally be cleaned under running water after each use. To prevent limescale deposits, it is important to use the right descaler, but there is also a proven home remedy with vinegar that removes limescale from the machine. But what is more recommended, the ready-made descaler or vinegar? The descaler easily dissolves the limescale that builds up inside the machine over time; the vinegar must first be mixed with equal parts water and then poured into the machine's water tank. The machine is then switched on for a normal brewing process and the descaler or the mixture of water and vinegar runs through the machine.Coffee machinesCoffee machines – Rinse with clear water
Once the descaler or the water-vinegar mixture has run through and freed the coffee machine from its stubborn limescale deposits, water must then be run through the machine again. To be absolutely sure that the coffee does not taste like descaler or vinegar later, you can also rinse the coffee machine with clear water several times in a row.
Removing coffee residue
Another problem with a coffee machine is coffee residue that gets stuck in the filter or on the warming plate. Especially the burnt-on coffee residue on the warming plate is a problem that must be solved in the truest sense of the word. It is best to use a soft cleaning cloth and a creamy scouring milk to loosen the crusts and then polish with a clean cloth until the warming plate shines again. It is even better, however, if the burnt-on coffee is removed immediately. The same applies to the filter, which should also be rinsed with clear water after every pot of coffee, because then coffee residue cannot even settle in the side grooves.
If you want to clean your coffee machine naturally, citric acid mixed with cold water is a good idea. If you have a denture cleaning tablet on hand, you can also use it as a cleaning agent for any classic filter machine.
