Judo cake

It had to be a judo cake for my son, because he enjoys this sport very much and it should be part of his birthday. After a short search on the internet with my son, we quickly agreed on a cake that we both liked very much. Here you can find the instructions for our personal judo cake.

Instructions:

Judo cakeWe decided on a chocolate cup cake and baked it in the morning. Only after it had cooled down well did we start decorating in the afternoon. For this, the ganache and let it cool down or harden a little. It is best to spread the ganache on the cake with a dough scraper. Also let the ganache dry slightly.

Then we rolled out a large piece of white fondant (approx. 2/3 of the 1 kg white fondant) on the large work mat with a fondant rolling pin.

Caution: The fondant should not be rolled out too thin so that it does not tear.

With the help of the rolling pin and my daughter, we placed the fondant on the cake and pressed it down well with the smoother. Carefully cut off the bottom edge that sticks out with a knife. Clean parts of the fondant can still be used for further decoration.

Now it was time for the judo belts. With the help of the gel color set we colored small pieces of the white fondant. We colored in this order:

  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Black

Extra tip: start with the light colors and slowly get darker, make sure that the work mat always stays nice and clean, otherwise it will additionally stain the fondant. For coloring, take a desired amount of white fondant in your hand and take only a little of the colors with a toothpick or small spoon. The gel colors really color very well. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, use plastic bags or disposable gloves for coloring.

So we made the white belt first. To do this, take a piece of fondant in the desired size, roll it into a long roll and smooth it out with the rolling pin. Cut the ends nicely with a knife and roll up 2/3 of the 'belt' with your hands. Place this roll on the cake. It held very well for us, if not, you can use a little water, but be careful with the colored fondant, it leaves marks once applied.

We made the double-patterned belts as follows: first roll out one color as an oblong roll and smooth it with the rolling pin. Then roll the desired 2nd color into a roll as well, place it on the 'belt' and smooth it out again with the rolling pin. Cut the ends nicely, roll up 2/3 again and place on the cake.

So that the lower edge of the cake also has a nice finish, we formed both white and the remaining colored fondant into balls and placed them around the cake.

For the lettering, roll out the desired colored fondant and cut out the desired letters. Place the letters on the cake and press down slightly.

Extra tip: So that the cake does not get too hard, wrap it carefully with cling film and keep it cool.

I have to say, I really liked the cake myself, it was a nice idea from my son and it wasn't that hard to make. The children at the birthday party were also enthusiastic – every child wanted to have their own belt.
