An opera set around an inn, a pharmacy, or a nursery? Oper rund um does exactly that and tries to make opera seductive for young and old today.
Opera in Vienna for children
For many, opera sounds like sitting for hours in an opera house with very little plot. Anna Katharina Bernreitner from Vienna proves that this does not always have to be the case. Her goal was to bring opera to life and to implement a performance practice that makes opera interesting for everyone. As a mother of two children, the trained opera director knows what brings joy to children. The performance venue for Oper rund um is related to the piece and enlivens everyday reality and operatic fantasy. For example, Hansel and Gretel is performed in a castle arena and in the forest, or Don Pasquale around a supermarket. A garden center, a pharmacy, or an outdoor swimming pool have also been used as venues. Oper rund um was founded a few years ago by Anna Katharina Bernreitner in Aschbach-Markt in Lower Austria, and since then an opera has been shown there every summer, always in a different location suitable for the piece.

This year, Oper rund um will be represented at the Wien.Festival for the 3rd time with an opera production. The really great thing about it is that the opera is available for everyone to see free of charge at various public places throughout Vienna. A highlight was the opera as part of this festival in 2015, "Hansel & Gretel – the Children's Opera Hike": Many parents and children were thrilled and visited this opera several times.
