Deeper scars are not only a cosmetic burden but often a psychological one as well. Especially when they are located on highly visible parts of the body, such as the face, neck, or décolleté. Those affected report complexes and problems with their self-esteem. For several years now, however, an effective treatment method has been available in aesthetic medicine that can successfully reduce scars as well as wrinkles. This is micro-needling, or so-called collagen induction therapy. The procedure stands out from other methods used in scar treatment, such as laser technology: the applications take place on-site in a medical practice and are comparatively gentle for patients. Usual activities can be resumed on the same day or at the latest one day after the treatment.
Dermaroller treatment
During a detailed consultation, the areas of the body to be treated are determined together with the attending dermatologist. At the treatment appointment itself, the area is prepared and cleaned accordingly. Subsequently, the skin surface is numbed with a local anesthetic cream. After an exposure time of about 30 minutes, the micro-needling session begins. The treatment is carried out with a dermaroller. This is a roller to which a cylinder is attached.
Small needles are attached to this cylinder. Depending on the appearance of the skin, the treating physician selects a needle length between 0.2mm and 2.5mm. This roller is rolled over the affected area in various directions. This causes minimal injuries (perforations) to the skin surface. This is the core of the treatment. The injuries stimulate blood circulation, and regenerating messenger substances are sent to the destroyed tissue. There, the skin begins to regenerate itself by forming new collagen and fresh cell fibers.
Areas of application
Both studies and medical practice have shown that treatments with the dermaroller can achieve positive effects for the following skin changes:
- Scars (e.g., acne scars)
- Folding
- Stretch marks (after pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations)
- Burn scars
In addition, micro-needling is also popular for general rejuvenation and tightening of the skin. Since the process of cell renewal is only completed weeks after the treatment, it is recommended to repeat the sessions at 6-8 week intervals. Depending on the appearance of the skin (degree of scarring), 3-4 sessions are required, followed by an annual refresher.
Supportive treatment
The largely painless procedure with the dermaroller ensures that the skin surface is permeable for a short time. This increases its receptivity to care substances many times over. Following the micro-needling, there is therefore the possibility of incorporating special active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, amino acids, and vitamins into the skin. These support the regeneration process, and the appearance becomes plumper, rosier, and fresher overall.
