Nut cake is so delicious and, above all, popular everywhere. Not only during the Christmas season, but all year round, nut cake is welcomed and enjoyed. Nevertheless, this nutty cake treat also packs quite a punch in terms of calories.

I replace

Sinful nut cake

About 100g of nut cake contains about 456kcal. Not bad for a small piece of cake, and yet nuts are not just fattening: they are rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, folic acid, and iron. Due to the many unsaturated fatty acids, nuts also help prevent cardiovascular diseases and have a positive effect on the brain and nervous system. Recommendations suggest snacking on a handful of nuts daily, which corresponds to about four to five walnuts.

How can I save calories with nut cake?

It is hardly possible to remove the fat from the nuts – but if you don't want to give up the great pleasure of nut cake, you can use tricks with the dough.

Yeast dough instead of batter

A light and airy yeast dough with flour, yeast, a little sugar, and an egg ultimately has fewer calories than a batter.

Comparison:

  • 100g nut cake with yeast dough contains 340kcal
  • 100g nut cake with shortcrust pastry, on the other hand, 421kcal
  • 100g nut cake with batter even 456kcal.

Whole wheat flour instead of wheat flour

Additionally, you can use different types of flour for the dough. Not only pure wheat flour can be used, but also whole wheat flour or spelt bran.

Comparison:

  • 100g wheat flour contains 337kcal
  • 100g whole wheat flour 294kcal
  • 100g spelt bran even only 172kcal.

Oat flakes instead of nuts

Another possibility is to replace about a third of the nuts with oat flakes to replace. This can save quite a few calories, but not at the expense of taste.

Honey instead of sugar

If you want to be even more sophisticated, you can also cleverly reduce the sugar in the cake. Part of the sweetness can simply be replaced by apple, agave, or pear syrup. Beet syrup or honey are equally advantageous. You have to play with the proportions and try out how much sweetness is needed.

Low-fat curd instead of butter

And what about the butter? Many cake recipes call for butter. Simply replace the butter with lower-calorie margarine or low-fat quark.

Note: simply replace the amount of butter specified in the recipe with double the amount of low-fat quark.

With all these tips, you can save an incredible amount of calories and still conjure up a delicious, sweet nut cake. This one, however, goes less quickly to the hips and provides a new taste experience. Have fun baking.
