A hearty cheese platter is almost indispensable for cold buffets. But which cheese should I choose? Above all, how much? With the following tips, your cheese platter is guaranteed to be a success.

Variety on the cheese platter

To ensure sufficient variety for the invited cheese lovers, at least 4 different types of cheese should be represented. Some suggestions:

  • Hard cheese: Parmesan, Emmental
  • Semi-hard cheese: Edam, Gouda, butter cheese, nut cheese, truffle cheese
  • Soft cheese: Brie, Camembert
  • Blue cheese: Gorgonzola, Roquefort, Cambozola
  • Cream cheese: Cottage cheese, cream cheese, herb roll
  • Washed-rind cheese: Quargel or Harzer cheese

Depending on taste and availability, many other popular types of cheese are available. Goat or sheep cheese, for example, provide a Mediterranean flair.

When it comes to cheese, the quantity is what matters

For the amount of cheese you need, the following applies:

  • Cheese platter and buffet: If the cheese platter is part of the buffet, you can count on 100 g of cheese per person, for dessert 50-80 g.
  • Cheese platter as a main course: If the cheese platter is to be served as a main course, you should count on 200-300 g of cheese per person.

As decoration or as a perfect side dish in terms of taste, the following are excellent:

  • Grapes
  • Pear or apple slices
  • Nuts
  • Herb sprigs
  • Olives or
  • savory pastries, crackers, breadsticks, salt sticks
  • salami sticks or ham rolls or bacon
  • various chutneys

Attention – here less is more – the cheese should ultimately be the focus.

All about the cheese platter – helpful tips

Always arrange the cheese clockwise according to flavor and not just by group: thus, start with the mild ones and then move on to the piquant varieties (such as Gorgonzola or Parmesan).

Take the cheese out of the refrigerator about half an hour beforehand so that its aroma can unfold.

It is best to serve various types of bread (from baguette to nut bread) and crackers or breadsticks. You should also put Aceto Balsamico on the table – it tastes heavenly with Parmesan!
