Anyone who would like to have an orderly, symmetrical garden should ideally create a formal garden This is characterized by basic architectural patterns that can be playful, modern, or classic. Here are a few basic features to consider to make it perfect:
- The framework is formed by green walls, such as walls, fences, or clipped hedges
- The garden is structured by trellises, clipped hedges, or climbing frames. The rule here is: high elements divide the garden, low ones structure it
- Furthermore, paths structure the garden and form geometric patterns
- If a lawn is desired, then only a very well-maintained, closely cut ornamental lawn
- A must is graphic elements: trees, standard-trained trees, and shrubs that are trimmed into geometric shapes such as spheres, pyramids, cones, etc.
- Beds and paths are clearly bordered with avenue-like hedges (e.g. boxwood or yew), flower strips, or lawn strips
- In the beds, sculptures, fountains, or ornamental containers form the focal point
- Another must in such gardens is benches, arbors, or even a pavilion
- Ornamental decorative beds with clear geometric shapes (e.g. made of boxwood) fit very well here
- Flowers also look very attractive in the geometric beds and loosen things up a little
The formal garden is also suitable for a small garden, but is generally very maintenance-intensive, since the geometric shapes have to be reworked again and again.
