For children and babies, everything lying around the house is more attractive than their own toys, and naturally, everything goes straight into their mouths. With flower pots filled with soil or granules, this is not ideal, as they may contain germs or the child could choke. But should you get rid of all your plants because of this? Here I have a simple trick for how you can bridge this time.
Protect flower pots from children with nylon tights
What you’ll need:
- Nylonstrumpfhose
Instructions:
To prevent the child from 'tasting' the soil, there is a simple trick: Cut one leg off an old nylon stocking and pull it over the pot from the bottom. Then tie the upper end tightly around the plant, and the danger is averted.
If the flower pot is larger, use the upper end of the tights and tie the legs together around the plant. Instead of tights, a jute sack also works. In any case, it should be a material that still allows air to reach the soil and through which you can easily water the plant.
Professional protective grille for plants
For those who want something a bit more professional and, above all, more attractive, you can purchase a protective grille. These are available in hardware stores or on Amazon: Protective grille on Amazon

Based on the idea with the nylon tights, there is now a newly developed product solution that we found on Amazon. The LYLANI flower pot protector made of elastic fabric is just as simple and practical to use as the tights, but in my opinion, it is significantly more aesthetic – even compared to the protective grilles.
