Pregnancy tips

In the video for the 5th week of pregnancy (week 5) on meinhaushalt.at important information and tips for pregnancy in week 5 are presented.

By now, your period is over a week late and the pregnancy test provides an accurate and reliable result: you are pregnant! Five weeks after fertilization, the embryo is now about 10 millimeters long. However, on the ultrasound image, only a small gestational sac with a shadow of the fetus and a rapidly beating little heart can be seen. From the sixth week of pregnancy, more precise measurements can be taken. In this week of Pregnancy the face, torso, and other extremities are forming on the embryo.

The little head, which was previously bent strongly forward in the child, is now slowly straightening up. In contrast to the other body parts, the head is significantly larger. This condition will also be present after birth. A newborn's head makes up about a quarter of its body length, compared to about an eighth in an adult. Arms and legs are still very short, but the hands and feet are visibly taking shape. Your child is thriving and doing wonderfully – incidentally, it is producing all sorts of hormones, which are the reason for morning sickness during pregnancy.

Important folic acid

Your child is strictly following the schedule for body development and, despite genetic differences, hardly differs from any other individual. The spinal cord is now also beginning to close, which was still exposed up to this point. For all these growth phases, taking folic acid in the Pregnancy is very important. Folic acid reduces neural tube defects in the child, which means that the chance of the child being born with an "open back" (spina bifida) is significantly lowered.

Morning sickness

For many pregnant women, pregnancy sickness also increasingly begins with the 5th week of pregnancy. A cold glass of milk after getting up, for example, can be helpful against this. Likewise, a carbohydrate-rich diet consisting of bananas, potatoes, rice, and pasta has proven to be extremely useful. Of course, measures such as putting your feet up and drinking plenty of fluids (at least two liters per day or more) are also recommended; however, if the symptoms do not improve, let your doctor prescribe something suitable.

Pregnancy complaints

In addition to all these enormous changes in the woman's body, a pregnancy can also bring other side effects. For some women, the breasts sometimes swell and become sensitive. Other women, however, feel a slight pulling in the abdomen – but don't worry: this is simply because the uterus is starting to grow. Since the hormone progesterone is also released at particularly high levels in the first weeks of pregnancy, many expectant mothers appear irritable, are frequently tired and lethargic, and may suffer from loss of appetite or constipation. A healthy and balanced diet can help to alleviate the symptoms of pregnancy.

Keep doctor's appointments

Make an appointment with your doctor soon. From now on, you will visit your doctor at least once a month and, from the 32nd week of pregnancy, every two weeks. They will perform all necessary examinations and enter important data into your maternity record. In some cases, your doctor will recommend a midwife; otherwise, you can also get advice from acquaintances, friends, and family. Feel free to register early with your midwife, who will accompany you over the next few months and will also be by your side for your well-being and that of your child after the birth.
