Beautiful silver unfortunately tarnishes unpleasantly after some time. With a piece of chalk in the drawer, this won't happen as quickly, because the chalk binds the moisture. Silver unfortunately always tarnishes; only a clear coat can prevent oxidation.
Cleaning tarnished silver with sour milk
What you’ll need:
- Sour milk
- warm water
- dry cloth
Instructions:
Silver becomes beautiful again if you let it soak in sour milk for about 30 minutes. Then rinse with warm water and polish dry well.
Cleaning tarnished silver with toothpaste
What you’ll need:
- Toothpaste
- soft cloth
Instructions:
When silver jewelry or cutlery is tarnished, the unsightly discoloration can be easily cleaned with a little toothpaste and a cloth. Rub the toothpaste in with the cloth until the discoloration is gone. The jewelry is guaranteed to look like new afterwards.
Extra tip: This also works very well with gold jewelry.
Storing silver tableware in a plastic bag
So that silver tableware does not always have to be cleaned quickly, it should be stored in an airtight plastic bag. This prevents the tableware from tarnishing.

- black tissue paper or aluminum foil
- soft cloth
Instructions:
Silver jewelry that is rarely worn is best wrapped in black tissue paper or aluminum foil so that it does not tarnish.
Cleaning silver jewelry with salt and aluminum foil
What you’ll need:
- Bowl
- hot water
- 2 tbsp salt
- Hand-sized piece of aluminum foil
- possibly a soft cloth
Instructions:
Dissolve 2 tbsp of salt in a bowl of hot water and add a piece of foil about the size of a hand. Place the jewelry inside and let it soak for about 30 minutes. It can optionally be polished afterwards with a cloth. Then it shines like new again.
Beer cares for silver
Simply soak the silver overnight in plenty of beer. The next day, you can remove the silver from the beer bath and wash it normally. Then polish it and the silver will shine with a new luster.
