When couples consciously decide to have a child, they often can hardly wait to hold a positive pregnancy test in their hands. But those who want to get pregnant should practice patience. Only for a few couples does a pregnancy happen right away. Just because you stop using contraception does not mean that a pregnancy is immediately possible. Certain conditions must be met for a pregnancy.

Catching the right moment

A woman's ovulation occurs about two weeks before the cycle ends. An egg is only fertile for 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. A man's sperm can survive in the female body for a maximum of five days. This means a woman is fertile for a maximum of six days a month. The best day for conception is the day before ovulation. Women can best determine this time with an ovulation test. The OvuQuick tests whether there is an increased LH (luteinizing hormone) in the urine. An increased LH value indicates that ovulation is imminent in the next 24 to 48 hours. During this time, couples who want to have children should have sex 2-3 times a week.
For some women, it happens that the ovulation test always shows a negative result. This can be due to the following points:

  • short cycle: LH value rises only slightly or the timing was missed
  • long cycle: test could have been performed too early
  • no ovulation: This happens sometimes and can be triggered by stress, hormonal disorders, and an unhealthy diet.

Wanting a child – from now on it's time to wait

Once couples have decided to have a child, they should first approach the topic in a very relaxed manner. The following points should be considered during this time:

Hormonal changes take time

Especially if hormonal contraception was used previously, the woman's hormone balance must first settle down again. Some women can get pregnant in the first month after stopping, while for others it takes several months. During your regular check-up, you can get information on this topic from your doctor.

Take care of yourself

A healthy and balanced diet and physical activity for both partners increase the chances of pregnancy. Many women also do not consume the daily recommended amount of minerals. This can be due to diet on the one hand and contraception on the other. Hormonal contraceptive methods, for example, inhibit the absorption of folic acid. If you are trying to conceive, it is advisable to balance your mineral levels with dietary supplements. Elevit provides all the important minerals that the female body needs to increase fertility.

Do not put yourself under pressure

Enjoy the time with your partner. In stressful times, togetherness often gets lost. Plan relaxing weekend activities or pursue a common hobby. Time together should not be limited to planned sexual intercourse.

Not pregnant and now what?

The prerequisite for a pregnancy is knowing the fertile period. If a pregnancy still does not happen after half a year, it is time to see a doctor. It is not uncommon for fertility disorders to be linked to an undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction, high cholesterol, obesity, or a disturbance of the vaginal flora, i.e., the cervical mucus is too thick and sperm cannot penetrate it. All these disorders can be remedied in consultation with the doctor through medication.
