The fascination of water: paddling pools, the sea, and the like have an inexplicable attraction for children. Unfortunately, drowning is therefore one of the most common causes of death among children up to the age of 14. Consequently, it is particularly important to familiarize the little ones with the basic safety rules by, in, and on the water.
Never leave children unattended near water
In general, non-swimmers should never be left unattended. In addition, swimming aids provide protection against drowning. However, anyone who thinks that these represent an unbeatable safety measure is mistaken. This is because water wings can lose air unnoticed or throw the child off balance.
With swim belts, the buckle can loosen or the belt may not be fastened correctly, which in turn poses a danger. Therefore, the rule is: never take your eyes off the child and protect them from high waves, undertows, or great water depths. Incidentally, inflatable animals, rings, and air mattresses do not count as swimming aids and therefore cannot guarantee protection.
One of the best ways to ensure water safety is through swimming lessons or the ability to swim. There are usually courses, programs, or recreational training sessions available to help the child become familiar with the water. Outside of a swimming facility (pools or indoor swimming pools), you should always ensure that the water does not contain any obstacles, such as rocks or murkiness.
Your child should always be able to judge well how far they can go into the sea or river. In addition, you should look out for lifeguards and let the child splash around near the lifeguard station.
