Gardening is a treat for plant lovers. Many find outdoor activities calming, generally beneficial, and stress-reducing. However, the weather does not always cooperate. To be independent of wind and weather, you need appropriate work clothing. Read here how to dress for the weather and what you should look for when making a purchase.
Rain gear – often not sufficiently waterproof!
Not every garden owner lets rain stop them. If important tasks are pending, high-quality rain gear provides the necessary protection. For jackets and trousers, waterproofness is arguably the most important purchase criterion. Water-repellent textiles do not offer sufficient protection when continuous rain sets in. Even if it is just drizzle. Water-repellent surfaces only keep you dry temporarily. Waterproofness is required. Waterproof rain gear can be identified by information regarding the DIN EN 343:2003 standard, according to which the following rain gear is considered waterproof:
- from a water column of 800 millimeters (class 2)
- from a water column of 1,300 millimeters (class 3)
The water column is a unit of measurement for indicating the waterproofness of rain gear. A hydrostatic water pressure test is used for the calculation. During this, the surfaces are confronted with water and increasing water pressure. As soon as the third drop can penetrate, the respective value is determined based on the corresponding water pressure. Hobby gardeners who work in the rain more frequently should opt for rain gear with a water column of at least 4,000 mm. This goes beyond DIN EN 343:2003 and ensures reliable rain protection. Keeping warm in winter – protection from head to toe
While there is less to do in the garden during snow and ice, garden owners are very busy in autumn and spring. So that working is enjoyable even on cold days, you need insulating equipment. While work shoes with thick soles and inner lining made of virgin wool keep you warm from below, a hat made of merino wool prevents a large part of body heat from being lost through the head. The natural fiber is ideal because it regulates body temperature well, warms pleasantly, and does not itch. When working with a chainsaw, axe, and other dangerous equipment, work shoes with a toe cap are recommended. You should also wear cut-resistant clothing.
In cold and wind, dressing according to the onion principle (layering) is elementary. Waterproof and windproof outerwear serves as the upper weather protection layer. The underlying thermal layer is responsible for insulation and prevents body heat from escaping to the outside, but at the same time prevents unpleasant heat accumulation. Moisture is wicked to the outside. The third and final layer is worn directly on the skin. It is responsible for absorbing sweat and transporting it away. Ideally, the three layers are coordinated with each other.

Protection in sunshine – the skin is particularly at risk!
But it is not just working in rain, wind, and cold that requires appropriate clothing. Even at high temperatures and direct sunlight, it is important to protect the body from external influences. Otherwise, there is a risk of sunburn and heatstroke. Summer work clothing must be absorbent, quick-drying, and easy to care for. In addition, ergonomic cuts and practical extras such as knee pads, pockets, and abrasion-resistant materials are an advantage.
