In office spaces and in your own home, stale air often creates unpleasant odors. This does not exactly make for a comfortable atmosphere. Furthermore, dust and dirt particles often also burden your own health. That is why there are five simple tips here to improve indoor air.
Tip #1: Ventilate regularly
There is hardly anything more pleasant than a well-ventilated room in an apartment. But proper ventilation is not as simple as it sounds at first. What should definitely be avoided is keeping all windows tilted all day long. This is because the rooms cool down very strongly in winter. Above all, however, increased humidity can lead to hazardous mold growth. It is therefore better to carry out shock ventilation three to four times a day for a duration of about five to ten minutes. This means that the windows in the apartment or office are completely opened for this time so that an intensive air exchange can take place. In this way, the stale air can be quickly removed from the apartment and all rooms can be supplied with fresh oxygen from outside.
Tip #2: Install a decentralized residential ventilation system
Especially in old buildings or in rooms that cannot be sufficiently ventilated, there is a risk that air quality will be very poor and sometimes even polluted due to a lack of circulation.
With a correspondingly powerful ventilation system, this health risk can be eliminated very easily. This has the advantage that constant opening and closing of the windows is no longer necessary. A decentralized residential ventilation system with heat recovery can be implemented very easily only where there is an actual need. This keeps acquisition costs low and ensures efficient operation.

The quality of indoor air depends largely on the respective temperature and humidity. The optimal room temperature varies depending on the intended use of the respective room. The following temperatures are recommended by experts:
Bedroom: 16 to 18 degrees
- Office and
- : around 20 degreesHome OfficeLiving room: 20 to 22 degrees
- Bathroom: 23 to 24 degrees
- Kitchen: 18 to 20 degrees
- The humidity should be between 40 and 60 percent. If the humidity is over 60 percent, there is an increased risk of mold growth. Anyone who wants to measure the humidity in their own premises can do so with a so-called hygrometer. These are available for a few euros in various online shops.
To reduce humidity if necessary, an electronic dehumidifier with a water tank helps in addition to regular ventilation.
Tip #4: Set up houseplants for air purification
Plants not only look very beautiful, they also have a decisive influence on the indoor climate. This is because they have the ability to break down chemical pollutants and thus naturally clean the air.
This effect is particularly great with the following plants:
Dragon tree
- Chrysanthemum
- Common ivy
- Snake plant
- However, a single plant is not enough to significantly improve the indoor climate. According to research, it is recommended to place one plant per nine square meters of living space. But be careful: plants also increase the humidity in the room. Those who already have high values here should therefore use the green cleaners in well-measured doses.
Tip #5: Avoid electrosmog
Electrical devices such as smartphones, TV sets, microwave ovens, and electric stoves generate electric and magnetic fields during operation. This is summarized under the term electrosmog. Although the health burdens are still controversial, the committee of the German Electrotechnical Commission has nevertheless set limit values that should under no circumstances be exceeded.
Many studies suggest that there is an increased risk of cancer due to the radiation. Furthermore, they affect the quality of sleep. It is therefore advisable not to charge your smartphone on the bedside table at night, but in another room. If electrical devices are not currently in use, it makes sense to disconnect them completely from the power supply.
