Mold forms on spoiled food and is an indication that it is inedible. Furthermore, this unwelcome guest also accumulates in houses. Mold not only leaves ugly traces behind, but can also significantly weaken the building's foundations. Humans also suffer damage from the stubborn mold fungus. It settles in the respiratory tract and can cause serious health damage cause.
Where does mold in the bathroom come from?
The fungal spores feel particularly comfortable at tropical temperatures, as this leads to vigorous growth and thriving of the pest. The bathroom in particular perfectly imitates these conditions, which is why it is frequently infested with mold. The bathroom is mainly used for personal hygiene, but also serves as a place of relaxation. Hot baths are supposed to relax tired muscles and free the mind from stress and anger. The resulting water vapor mixes with dust particles in the air and settles on the walls. As a result, unsightly black streaks form, which cling persistently to the masonry.
How can mold be prevented?
An effective way to prevent mold is to ventilate the bathroom regularly and extensively. It is particularly helpful if the window is already tilted while showering. This allows the water vapor to find its way out of the bathroom without attacking the walls. Opening the bathroom door, on the other hand, is not very useful. This procedure causes the fine droplets to spread into the living area, risking a mold infestation there as well.
Furthermore, it is not recommended to tile the entire bathroom. This is because the water vapor runs down the water-repellent material and then settles into the silicone joints. Instead, experts recommend that homeowners cover walls that are not in the immediate vicinity of the shower or bathtub with lime plaster. This material absorbs moisture from the air rather than repelling it. As a result, the mold has no chance of settling on the walls.
What is the best way to remove mold in the bathroom?
Chemical helpers that permanently get rid of mold can now be bought in every supermarket. Due to the chlorine they contain, the traces of the mold fungus can also be bleached. After using the mold spray, however, the room should be ventilated extensively to dispel the chemical vapors.
If you prefer something more natural, you can use yeast. This talented home remedy efficiently fights the pest and represents a long-term solution to the problem. However, since dry yeast in its usual form does not stick to walls, it must be dissolved in a small amount of water. This special mixture can then be applied to the mold without hesitation. For particularly effective cleaning, you should let the mixture work for a few hours before washing it off.
Even if the methods described drive away the mold in the long run, you should still not provoke the return of the mold. In addition, your wall will continue to show discoloration from the fungus. Painting the walls several times, however, will not only make the walls shine in their old glory, but also provides protection for the masonry.
Joint mold
Although silicone generally holds up well against the pest, it still needs to be replaced every ten to twenty years. Do not forget the joints on the windows. Crucial when renewing silicone joints: remove first, then re-apply. In addition, there is now mold-resistant joint silicone, which resists the mold fungus for a few years longer. In the meantime, it is a good idea to clean the joints with vinegar or vinegar essence. The liquids should definitely be diluted with water before use. But be careful: although vinegar is a true miracle cure, it cannot cope with mold spores either. It only removes the fungus. Suitable alternatives are also alcohol and methylated spirits.
Damaged interior
Not only walls and joints can be affected by the persistent fungus – furniture and towels can also be affected. Nevertheless, the items can still be saved. Fabrics are freed from the pest by a hot bath in heavy-duty detergent. The subsequent rinse cycle in the washing machine guarantees the removal of all residues. Affected furniture can be brought back into shape with the help of chlorine or hydrogen peroxide. However, they may need a new coat of paint afterwards.
