When winter hits the regions again at the end of January and there is no way through in many places, those who have taken precautions early on are in the fast lane. This includes not only the fact of having a reserve of road salt or other grit ready in advance or having the snow shovel at hand, but sometimes also the fact of being able to order a snow blower. Even with large amounts of snow and wintry temperatures, you have the opportunity to clear your own streets and paths in this way and increase safety for yourself and others.

How should you prepare for winter?

Although winter 2021 seems to be almost over and higher temperatures could come quickly after the snow, it is worth preparing for the next winter early on. Basically, only a few measures are required for this. These include, for example, the following points:

  • Check and replenish road salt stocks: Is there still enough road salt? Or does your own supply need to be replenished before winter sets in? In this context, it is also important whether you are allowed to use salt for gritting on site at all or whether you have to switch to ash, sand, or other grit. Depending on this, you should have a certain amount of it ready so that you can take action against slipperiness in an emergency.
  • Check or purchase a snow shovel: You should also check your own snow shovel. Did it break last winter? Or is the material brittle? If so, you should look for a new one. In some regions, a broom is sometimes enough to clear the paths of snow – if you are unsure, you should ask your neighbors how they handle it.
  • Protect the car before winter: You can and should also take special care of your own car in winter. If possible, the tank should not be almost empty, but also not completely full. In addition, the car should be parked in such a way that it cannot roll away on its own even when it is slippery – wedges placed against the wheels may help here. After winter, the vehicle should then be freed from road salt residues, which could otherwise "eat" into the bodywork.
  • Keep heavier equipment in mind: If a "snow catastrophe" threatens, you should also think about purchasing suitable equipment for snow and ice. A small grit spreader, for example, or a snow blower. You might also be able to join forces with your neighbors to reduce costs.

How else can you enjoy winter?

Once all this is done, you can look forward to winter quite relaxed. This is especially true if you still have some supplies in the house and don't necessarily have to go to the supermarkets. With a hot tea or coffee, you can then watch the snowfall or build a snowman in the garden with the children. And often winter is over as quickly as it came before. And somehow, many people then long for a few snowflakes again. At the very least, however, you are then optimally prepared for the next onset of winter.
