There is a trend toward making your own cosmetics, because it has many advantages: you know what’s in them, and you can vary them according to your own taste. You don’t need much for an exfoliating scrub or sugar scrub, and the ingredients can easily be bought at the supermarket.
Here I have found recipes for scrubs that are just to my taste. Give them a try; they are quick to make and also make great gifts:
Homemade scrub with coconut oil and sugar
Ingredients:
- 200 g coconut oil
- 100 g brown organic sugar
- 50 g honey
Instructions:
The coconut oil should be at room temperature so that it can be shaped. If necessary, you can warm the oil slightly in the microwave. But then let it cool down again before adding the sugar. Add honey and sugar to this easily moldable mixture, either with your hands or with a spoon, and mix well. Put the scrub into a jar with a screw-top lid.
Extra tip: If the sugar settles after a while, that doesn’t matter; simply stir before use and continue using it.
Information about the ingredients
Coconut oil is a particularly nourishing and skin-friendly oil. It cleanses very effectively and has an antibacterial effect without clogging the pores. Honey opens the pores and provides moisture.
Variations for a homemade scrub
As an alternative to sugar, you can also use coffee, coffee grounds, or poppy seeds. You can also vary the oils; almond oil also works here, as it has a soothing effect on the skin and is very suitable for sensitive skin. If you also add tea tree essential oil, it has an additional anti-inflammatory effect.
Homemade scrub with gingerbread
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup cane sugar
- 1 tsp gingerbread spice (or cinnamon or fruit syrup)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- optional: 20 drops of essential oil (as a fragrance enhancer)
Instructions:
Mix all the ingredients well in a bowl, transfer the mixture to a jar with a screw-top lid, and close it. Done!
Is it better to use sugar or salt for a scrub?
You can use sugar or salt for scrubs. Sugar is recommended for more sensitive skin, as the individual crystals are not as sharp as salt.
Extra tip: Homemade items are always very well received as gifts! This way you always have a small, special gift to bring along!
