It is no longer set in stone that fathers bring home the money and mothers are responsible for raising the children. Many modern fathers are going with the new zeitgeist and taking the opportunity to spend more time with their offspring. Some also decide to stay at home entirely to dedicate themselves to the children and the household. This sometimes requires nerves of steel – the right everyday clothing, which reflects the necessary flexibility of a stay-at-home dad while still looking smart, can be an enormous help in many situations.

What defines the dad look

The fact that the so-called dad look is currently very trendy proves that a lot has changed. This refers primarily to the typical look of American dads. This is relatively easy to achieve:

  • Straight-cut jeans
  • Casual shirt or sweater
  • Quilted vest or leather jacket
  • Comfortable sneakers

Everyday suitability as the most important requirement

With the dad look, it is not important that the outfit fits perfectly. For the Household with baby or toddler, it is much more important that it is practical and functional, and you are actually allowed to see that. Tight slim-fit jeans, for example, are not suitable for everyday life with a child. After all, the father should still be able to move enough to play with his children, hoist them from the floor into their high chair for meals, and manage the rest of the household. Fashionable and comfortable men's sweaters and jeans with a slightly wider cut are much better suited for this. Ideally, the garments are made of robust materials that can withstand the daily rigors for at least a certain amount of time. For easy cleaning, they should also be machine washable.

How to make the look functional yet stylish

Even if the term is usually understood to mean a rather conservative look, the dad look is sometimes deliberately combined in a colorful way, which makes it even more eye-catching. So, if you want to make a good impression in the dad look, you should ask yourself the following questions: Does the look seem thrown together? Do the clothes not fit properly because they are a little too big or, in the worst case, even too small? Then there is a good chance that the dad look will seem pretty uncool. But with the right tips and a well-groomed appearance, it becomes a hit. To achieve this, only a few basic rules need to be followed.

Rule #1: Choose the right fit

Regular fit or comfort fit clothing is optimal for the dad look. The clothes can therefore be a little looser, as this provides the necessary freedom of movement. However, they shouldn't fall off your body either. Therefore, you should avoid compromises and only buy what fits well. When buying online, you can also order two sizes directly, try the clothes on at home in peace, and send the rest back.

The only exception: trousers that are a little too long can simply be rolled up. That is currently very trendy. It is best to reveal the exposed ankles in white tennis socks.

Rule #2: Determine a color concept

Continuity in the look by choosing a color scheme is well received. For example, a light blue shirt or a dark blue fine-knit sweater goes well with blue jeans with a used-look wash. Brown leather sneakers complement the outfit. The burgundy knit vest, on the other hand, goes well with black jeans and a black shirt. Here, a targeted contrast can be set with white sneakers. Patterned clothing is also allowed. If you decide on a checkered casual blazer, you should ensure that at least one color of the pattern is picked up elsewhere.

Rule #3: Sneakers are allowed, but not a cure-all

Neon-colored sneakers are more for the gym – so minimalist models are more suitable for everyday life. These can definitely have a leather upper. Loafers and boots are also very comfortable and sometimes even fit better with certain outfits.

Conclusion

If these rules are followed, the hectic and often stressful everyday life with a child can be mastered in a comfortable and functional outfit that also looks really stylish. This makes you feel comfortable not only within your own four walls, but also when you head out the door.
