By the time spring cleaning takes hold of us at the latest, the desire to redesign our own home often arises as well. In this guide, we would like to explain that you do not necessarily have to renovate your entire four walls and buy everything new to do so. Even on a small budget, you can make a big impact.

Among other things, we will show you how you can implement the following:

  • Use colors and textiles for more coziness
  • Transform the living area into an urban jungle
  • Leave your personal stamp

If you are ready for change and creative ideas, let us begin the redesign.

Harness the power of colors

With no other tool can you create changes as quickly and cost-effectively as with a new wall color. It also has a major advantage: With a carefully chosen color, you can positively influence your own mood and thus the overall harmony in your home.

However, if you mix too many colors, this can easily look chaotic. Therefore, choose a maximum of two theme colors that run through the room or the entire apartment. In general: Light colors such as white, cream and pastel shades make the room appear larger, which is why they are ideal especially for small rooms. They also look more inviting and not oppressive, unlike dark colors.

If you want to bring summer freshness and warmth into your home, then a bold yellow and orange are excellent choices – especially in the living area. Since they have an invigorating effect, you should opt for calming colors in the bedroom, such as a light blue or reed green. The latter also looks extremely elegant in the bathroom and kitchen.

Do you like it colorful? Then add accents with photo or patterned wallpaper. Tile stickers look particularly elegant on kitchen and bathroom tiles and are an affordable alternative to real tiles.

Textiles create coziness

An easy way to bring more coziness into your home is to use textiles. Place comfortable cushions in different shapes and matching colors on your sofa, decorate it with faux fur or a cozy blanket, and place a large rug in your living room. Make sure that at least all the front legs of the surrounding furniture fit on the rug. A runner under the dining table should be large enough so that the pulled-out chairs can also fit on it.

Even if you use blinds for your windows, we also recommend hanging long curtains. The soft, flowing fabric exudes homeliness and harmonizes with the other decorative elements. Also pay attention to a good mix of materials in your furniture. If you use a lot of wooden furniture, for example, loosen up the range with an upholstered armchair. In a bold color, it also becomes a great statement piece in your interior.

Plants for fresh air and relaxation

Do you spend a lot of time working from home? Good indoor air is essential for your productivity. Plants help with this, as thanks to photosynthesis they clean the air of CO2 and provide it with fresh oxygen. But that’s not all: The green hue has been proven to have a calming effect on the mind, so you feel less stressed.

So why not use both benefits and transform your own home into a small urban jungle? To do this, combine various potted, standing and hanging plants with one another and place them on the windowsill, your desk, a shelf or a plant ladder. If you do not have a separate study or your living and sleeping area are in the same room, large potted plants also serve as aesthetic room dividers.

Use light sources strategically

Daylight and artificial light are essential to keep you in a good mood and prevent you from slipping into sleep mode. Especially in apartments with few windows or limited access to daylight, many lamps are indispensable. This also makes you independent of the whims of nature, i.e. daylight. Work with different lamp designs: Floor lamps are perfect for putting your favorite armchair in the spotlight. A side or bedside table needs a table lamp. LED light strips or string lights stuck into your shelf or TV cabinet create beautiful accents and highlight your furniture.

Leave your personal touch

You can work as much as you like with harmonious colors, cozy textiles and lights – the final bit of homeliness only comes from your personal touch. Instead of investing in off-the-shelf furniture and decorations, you should therefore display objects that you associate with fond memories. This could be Grandma Martha’s old sewing machine, the mobile from your vacation in Greece, or a beautiful find from the flea market.

If you enjoy creative work, you can paint your own wall art or sew cushion covers to your taste. A photo wall of your most beautiful moments with friends and family also looks great in a picture-frame collage. To ensure it does not look chaotic, you should hang the frames at the same distance from one another.
